Jane's Story

The photo is of Barbara Gilmore Youngblood and me at Point Barrow, Alaska, in July, 2007. After high school I went to college , majored in Biology, and graduated in 1962. My parents moved to New Hampshire in 1961, so I lost touch with Milford after that. I received an MS in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin in 1965. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia from 1965-1969, where I taught biology, chemistry and health science at Sekolah Menengah Ibrahim in Sungei Patani, Kedah. It is a pleasure to have been part of the lives of my students for a while and to have been part of the broadening of the educational base in a young and hopeful country, when I was young and hopeful too. I spent eight months traveling home in 1969. I visited Cambodia, Pakistan, Burma, and Afghanistan, among other places, and I¿m so glad I made that trip when I did. I returned to New Hampshire for a few months, then moved to California. My husband-to-be, Stephen Wong, who was the art teacher at Ibrahim School, joined me in Berkeley at the end of 1970. We were married early in 1971. We have lived in Berkeley ever since. Stephen works as an art te...Expand for more
acher in San Francisco. We have two adult children, Michael (1974) and Alice (1976). Michael graduated from Williams College in 1996, is married and living in Brooklyn N.Y., and teaches high school science in Manhattan. He and his wife have three sons (a two year old and eight month old twins). Alice graduated from Colby College in 1998, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1998-2001 where she worked with a community to build an aqueduct. She received a BSN from Johns Hopkins in 2003, and is now a nurse manager for the medical respite program at the San Francisco Department of Housing and Urban Health. I started working at the California Department of Health Services Microbial Diseases Laboratory as a Public Health Microbiologist in 1970, and retired at the end of 2002. The last thirteen years I was the supervisor of the Special Pathogens unit (we worked on all the pathogenic bacteria that do not cause TB or diarrhea). I also taught Microbiology at Vista Community College in Berkeley (now Berkeley City College), from 1996-2002. Other interests? Walking, reading, brewing beer, knitting, genealogy. .
