Janet's Story

Life I attended the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University and graduated with a degree in elementary education. My husband and I were married two weeks after graduating college and moved to the Oklahoma City area until he finished his ROTC training. We left Oklahoma in 1980 as he began a 20 year career as a military officer. We have lived all over the United States and I learned to adjust to blizzards, intense heat, the D.C. beltway, and to make friends quickly. I loved the adventure of going to a new place and finding my way around. My husband and I have three precious children who have grown up to be caring, independent adults. Our daughters are married and one of them lives far away. She and her husband have two little boys. The other daughter lives a few hours away and she and her husband have a little girl. Our son is married and also lives a few hours away. We returned to Oklahoma in the summer of 2000 to live and be close to our parents and siblings. I was able to help care for my mom in her last years. I never thought "coming home again" would be so heartfelt. Music has always been a big part of my life from the time I was a child. s not that good at it., I enjoy singing in my small church choir and love to listen and sing along to music as I am at home or in the car. Workplace I taught in private schools for eleven years, having taught most grades from PK through middle school. I began my public school teaching in 2005. I retired in June of 2015 after 21 years of teaching, The majority of those years were spent teaching second graders and I loved it.There is never a dull moment with little ones! I stay busy now visiting my grandbabies, being involved with different church groups, and substituting for the school district where I had taught, It's nice to be home before 7 p.m. these days! I hope to start doing some volunteer work in the coming year. Inspiration My inspiration comes from having a dad who not only worked hard to provide for a big family but also showed me how to love unconditionally. While he never said the words much, his actions spoke volumes. I am proud to be his daughter and miss him more than words can ever say. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Miss Milton, my 7th grade math teacher. She never gave up believing I would overcome my math anxiety and pushed me to succeed. She is one of the reasons I became a teacher..
