Janet's Story

School St. Annes school:1960-1967, St. Augustines school:'67-'69, St. Peter's HS, '69-'73, Douglass College, Rutger's University, '73-'77:BA English Lit. and Fine Art, Pratt Institute,'77-'80: BFA in Graphic Design, St John's University,2005-2008: Masters in English Lit. Workplace I teach Art and music at a Staten Island Public school. I've worked at several schools (including local Catholic schools) and I always enjoy the kids. I wouldn't have considered this my dream job when I was in college. (I was heading towards the graphic design and illustration fields); I got into it pretty much by accident. I was in the right place at the right time. Now that I'm doing it, however, well, like I said, I love the kids. I'm writing a novel in my free time (Hah, I've been working on it for 3 years so that shows you how much free time a teacher gets!), and I'm hoping to make that a new career path, if I ever get published. (People tell me I'm a pretty good story teller. We'll see!) I have always loved music. I was in concert choir all through Grammar and High school. I even sang in the Chorus for Fiddler on the roof in HS. I play guitar and write Christian songs which I've recorded on two CDs, "Jesussheep: songs from a Father's Heart" and the one I am currently completing Jesussheep: Love one another Little Children... You can find them for sale at the INDY online store CDbaby.com I've been married for 31 years to a wonderful Polish guy named Walter and I have two grown-up children, Louis who lives in Seattle, and Beth who lives here in Queens. My Elementary School years At St. Annes- In first grade, sister Peter Damien scared us all and the boys were always in trouble. I buzzed (tickled)Roy on the bus on the way to school in first grade cause I had a crush on him. In second grade, I had mrs. Larken, who I adored, and who taught me a song for everything. I still sing today. In third Grade, Joey Boniface came to St. As and he was my best friend for the next two years, Even though he left St. As, we stayed in touch and he came all the way to NJ to take me to my Junior Prom in HS. We lost track of one another a few years later, but I found him here at Classmates and we're in touch again. I made friends with June Kuntz and Lorraine Hyland. June sold me all of her Barbie Dolls and cases and clothes for $10 in sixth grade, and for my 12th birthday, Lorraine, June and a new girl, Bonnie came and slept over. I even have pictures! Than I moved to NJ cause my Dad's job moved and I lost track of everyone. I'd love to find June, Bonnie and Lorraine, or hear about them again. Since then I've kept in touch with all of my friends. nds, Maria Koenig and Wen Shen. Wen's family owned a chinese restaurant. I got my first job waiting on tables in their restaurant when I was 16, and I waitressed for the next seven years to put myself through two different colleges. Wen is now a Doctor. They both live in Maryland. I still send both of them Christmas cards, but I haven't seen them since I moved to Queens 33 years ago. Highschool at St. Peter's Nancy Porter, Diane Siska, and Ilonka Seamon were my best friends. I've seen Dian and Ilonka a few times through the years and still consider them friends. Nancy Porter is still and will always be my BFF and I miss her cause I haven't seen her for a few months. She wrote one of the chapters in my on going novel! I always wanted to be an artist, even though there were no art classes in any of the Catholic schools that I went to and I had no idea what an artist does in the real world. The nun who had guidence at St. Peter's wanted to know if I wanted to be a teacher or a nurse. When I told her that I wanted to be an artist, she didn't know what to do with me. I asked her if Douglass college(the public university) had an art school she said she supposed so and that's where I applied! College at Douglas- I did learn an awful lot about Art!(nothing about being an artist though!)My best friend at Douglass was Kathy Erland, (then Ryan) She lives in Florida now and I talk to her on the Phone from time to time. One thing I learned at Douglass was that I didn't want to be a Fine artist. After one course in commercial Art at Livingston College, my senior year I decided that I wanted to be a commercial artist and headed for the big city, and Pratt Institute! I love Pratt. I went for a degree in Graphic design, which is now obsolete because computer graphics became the rage after I graduated and I never took a class in computer work. Kim Brown Irvis was my best friend there. We're still in touch. I went to the opening of a photo exhibit that she gave up in Washington heights a few weeks ago. I'm buying one of her Photos. My daughter, Beth loved it too. She graduated from Pratt with a degree in Architecture. If you had asked me if I would become a teacher back in college I would have answered with an emphatic no! But...I found it hard to keep up with freelancing after Pratt, cause I had my kids to take care of and no one to watch them for me. By the time they were old enough for me to go back to work, as I said, everything was computers. I loved kids by that time and the first job interview that I went on was for a Catholic school Art teacher. They admired my college portfolio and hired me that day. And after that, my new career took off.
