Janet's Story

Life Married just 3 weeks after Graduation ceremonies in 1972, I separated in 1993. During that 20+ years, three kids entered into my personality. They were the best thing that came out of that marriage. As a "stay-at-home" Mum, I was very involved with my son & two daughters' lives as they grew up. Coaching Softball & Jr. 5-Pin Bowling, Cub Scout leader, even did a semester as a Grade Six English "Teachers Assistant". ( I was asked by one "Bright Light" if spelling counted?!) For a number of years, I cared for our broodmare and her foals while my husband was involved with raising & training Standardbred race horses. I have raised & shown Labrador Retrievers under the Canadian Kennel Club name Hambletavon Reg'd. Loved this endeavour and miss it now that I'm on the road so much. I travel a great deal now but didn't stray far from home during my marriage. Only twice out of Ontario in those 20 years. Once for two wonderful weeks with my mother in 1983, I went back in time to my English birthplace. These were two of the most insightful, marvelous weeks of my life. The second trip I organized with my girlfriend in 1989. We spent a week in Kentucky, seeing the "best of the best" horse farms. The highlight of this trip was a private meeting with the great thoroughbred Secretariat. I have had a few different addresses over the years. The first 10 years of my marriage were spent in an 800 sq. ft shoebox at Kennedy Road & Finch. From 1982 until my separation in 1993, I lived on a 2 acre farm in Ballantrae. I spent the next few years in Stouffville / Musselmans Lake until my final move to a little piece of heaven-on-earth north of Barrie. I own a large converted cottage across the street from a beautiful piece of Georgian Bay beach. ...Expand for more
It is perfect for my lifestyle as I spend the summer months in Ontario and the winters in Florida. My Bonita Springs, Florida home is also a source of great pleasure. It backs onto a large pond with osprey, egrets, herons ,a bald eagle and even a small alligator as residents. It was a long business road to get to this place in my life. In 1988, when my youngest child started Grade 1, I was propelled back into the workforce by my husband, after 13 years away from any formal job. Terrified. That would be the best word to use to describe that first day in the traffic Department at IBM. Yet 18 months later, when my contract was completed, there emerged a whole new person. Ready to go on to a new career at Emerson Electric (much to the objections of my former husband, who expected me to go back to being his domestic goddess). The final days to our marriage counted down when my former boss died late in 1991 and I took over running her linens store in 1993. The business has changed, grown and developed over the years. That original store was totalled by an arsonist in April 1995 but the company has done well in spite of this setback. Currently, there is a website that specializes in clip-ons for prescription glasses. My newest product line is handmade bags , purses & jewellery. These are our own designs made from pandan grass, coconut shell, exotic woods and seashells. Personal current status is an 10 year old grandson and 6 shared grandchildren with my life-partner of 14 years. (we even have 1 great-grandchild...how scary is that!) It's been 9 1/2 years without a cigarette, my beloved Mum died May 26, 2005 and I weigh a few pounds more than I did in 1972... but life continues to be interesting and I'm glad to be here writing this.
