Janet's Story
Yes, I'm living in New Jersey! It's not soooo bad, really. Graduate school at Princeton brought me here in 1988--also my parents retired here (now THAT might be crazy). They're both still living at 90, and I'm their nearby kid...an experience that stretches & enriches me.
Yeah...it took me 18 years after college to get to grad school. After completing a PhD in dead women poets, I was hired at The College of New Jersey to teach women's and gender studies, all of which I love. After decades of self-employment and insecurity, tenure inspires wonder and gratitude. Being a prof probably counts as my biggest surprise in life. It's a long way from my weirdest job--selling Avon door-to-door in west Altadena, a job I quit due to conscience. This was the summer of 1966.
Being a teacher, of course I think often of teachers I had. At Muir, Mrs. Register, Mr. Hoyt, Mr. Eberhart, especially. And a history teacher whose name I forget. At the time he was deadly boring, but he was a real scholar, and somehow permitted me to do a term project on John Woolman's Journal, a book that remains extremely meaningful to me...true, I wasn't much of a partier--lol!
I'm following the prompts to tell stories here, and I suppose I really have to tell you that my first real crush happened in kindergarten at Jackson Elementary. Rodney, I've surfed you o...Expand for more
n the internet, and found that you too grew up to be a professor. I don't know if you remember when David Blackwell (who I guess had a crush on me) came in from recess and told me: "Janet, you can't marry Rodney! He throws sand in people's eyes." Either that, or the fact that my family left for Korea after second grade, pretty much wrecked our romance. I trust life has turned out well for you anyway!
I dread to think how you remember me, if you do. Honestly I remember very few names from Muir--I've been away from Pasadena for so long and have never been inspired to go to a reunion. So: rather than remembering me, I hope you'll get in touch with the nearly-60 me, if you see something here that connects for you.
Truly happy! That's a big one. Often, in my life just as it is, I'm truly happy. Wishes: to own a little house of my own, to be more consistent about taking care of myself (my main do-over--what I'd do differently if I could--would be to avoid getting arthritis in my neck!), to see my sisters more often, to go to meditation retreats someplace in the mountains with a lake to swim in twice a year, to have all violent conflicts and all injustices in the world come to an end forever, to have humans get right with the environment. As a short-term measure, I'll be happy to see the Republicans get out of the White House.
