Janet's Story

I was that girl with big Elton John style glasses. I had so many friends at Loveland High School that I will always remember and cherish. But once I graduated I went to Colorado State University majoring in journalism. I flunked out. So I did what any other 19-year-old girl would do. I moved to Kansas. Actually I got a job as a newspaper reporter and spent four years in Kansas plus another few years in Colorado as a newspaper reporter. I was pretty damn good. Is it ok to brag a bit? I married in 1983 and my husband and I moved to Wyoming where he worked for Amoco Oil. It was a boom town that grew from 4,000 to 10,000 in a couple of years so I had a great time there is a newspaper reporter. But my mom started to develop early onset Alzheimer’s and I decided to go back to school at age 40 and study social work. I moved in the 1990s to Colorado where I worked for many years as an Alzheimer’s educator and for the Alzheimer’s Association in Colorado Springs and also opened up a few senior residences in Colorado Springs. In 2007 my husband and I retired and bought a small RV and sold everyth...Expand for more
ing to hit the road. In 2010 we headed up toward Alaska and I spent eight years there when it was really only supposed to be a summer. While there I was a social worker with chronically mentally ill adults. In 2019 my husband and I moved to Panama for my second attempt at being retired. We became ex-pats there and spent the pandemic in Panama before deciding it was time to move again, and this time we chose Mexico. We currently live in Mexico not too far from Guadalajara and we travel every month or so to various parts of the country. We forgot to have kids so there obviously are no grandchildren. And I’m not even a very good aunt. I look forward to seeing all of you in August. I’ll be the one wearing a hat because I really hate my hair. And I no longer have those Elton John-style glasses. I’m getting old. I had cataract surgery and now I am free of glasses that I had since the third grade. But the bad thing about cataract surgery is that when I look in the mirror I see all the wrinkles I never saw before and the bags under my eyes. But what the hell. We have all changed a little bit.
