Janet's Story
I grew up on a farm on the edge of Swansea, Illinois, right next to Belleville, Illinois,, just across the river from Saint Louis, Missouri. My family was active in the Methodist Church and I sang in the Angel Choir, the Junior Choir and the Senior Choir. I loved going to Little Grassy Lake Methodist Camp and was also very active in the Junior and Senior MYFs.
Scouting was another of my passions. I couldn't wait to be a Brownie, then a Girl Scout and then a Senior Girl Scout. I earned every badge in the book except for canoeing and skiing, and I didn't do those because there wasn't anybody in the area who could help me with them. I was a Mary's Helper at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital as part of my community service for the Curved Bar rank - equivalent to Eagle in the Boy Scouts. I loved going along with younger girls to camp-outs as an assistant leader.
Then I went off to Illinois Wesleyan. By the time I finished college, I knew I wanted to get out of southern Illinois and see more of the world. Instead of following my sister out to San Francisco and joining the hippies, I went to Dallas and found work. I had already found a boyfriend and he was studying there. ree years in Texas, but both of us had an itch for broader horizons.
We took off for Bolivia, with the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, in 1973. He was a pastor in a local church and I worked in the educational ministry. Both of our sons were born there, the older one in Santa Cruz and the younger one in La Paz. Except for a time when we left Bolivia to cool our heels after a military coup, we stayed in Bolivia until 1985.
I had arranged for a year of study leave in 1985 but it turned out to be almost two years of medical leave in which I finished my M. Div. at Saint Paul School of Theology. (I also went back there for a D. Min. later.)
We arrived in Costa Rica in December, 1986, assigned by the GBGM to the Seminario BÃÂblico Latinoamericano. The SBL is now the Universidad BÃÂblica Latinoamericana and we have just now retired from there after many years of teaching, Roy in the field of ethics and me in both pastoral and systematic theology.
We now enjoy retirement and our little grandson. And, I enjoy making some of the most delicious truffles you can find anywhere in the country. We also enjoy birdwatching and hiking in the many beautiful parks and reserves here in Costa Rica.
