Janet's Story

Life--- After high school, my life changed quickly. I can't really explain it except to just say that GOD did the changing--my heart, the path, everything. It's been a good thing! At college I met my husband. Within days I told a friend I thought that was the guy I was to marry. It really scared her--she'd known me since I was 9 (she, her sister and I were known as "the Oregon girls" at the small Bible college in Dallas, TX) and knew I'd said I was "never going to marry nor have kids". Dan and I have been married 30 yrs. this May:) We have 4 children; a daughter, 27, and 3 sons, ages 25, 20, and 16. I'm a Grandma of 4 "sweeties"!!! We live in TX, now, but still are missionaries to Mexico and have been for 30 yrs. We're bilingual--finally learned Spanish--total immersion in 1978! Most of our work has been in remote areas of Oaxaca and Veracruz. We've been back on the US side for 13 yrs. We've homeschooled for 23 yrs. I do Creative Memories and have done, for over 13 yrs.--scrapbooking--a home business. We live fairly close to S. Padre Island--we enjoy our family time there:) For over 14 yrs. we've gone to an awesome family camp in WI. We also camp here in TX. Yet, I miss Oregon and value the years at Nestucca--you all were good to know. Great memories!! Workplace Being a "home exec. mgr." is very rewarding!! I really get ...Expand for more
to know my kids and enjoy them--had a lot of help getting started on the hm. schooling. Also, get to have a home business w/the scrapbooking/indep. consult. of a nat'l. hm. based co., called Creative Memories...got to know a lot of people here, when we moved out of Mexico. In Mexico, I taught women to read and teach Bible lessons, and taught children. The biggest surprise I"ve ever had was in a small town just W. of Reynosa, Tamps., Mex. (90's). I used illustrations as a teaching aid--very basic "stick figure" drawings. I could tell we were drawing a blank, literally. Within sight of the U.S. border, just across the river, these kids had never drawn, never held a crayon. Even as a home-schooler, its been a yearly tradition to stock up on the sales for sch. supplies. So, every child got their own box of Crayons and a folder w/paper. Within wks. they had learned and drawn all about Joseph and Daniel, etc...very rewarding! I would ask where a student was--at times they'd point at the river and we'd see a "coyote" leading them across as they sat on an intertube...we most enjoyed the interior----if one were to mute the movie "Romancing the Stone" and watch the scene about crossing the bridge, and swinging over a river---that's just a few miles from where we lived 12 yrs. and often picnicked! It's near the town of Xico, at Texolo Falls.
