Janet's Story

Life After I graduated from college, I lived in several different cities. I have been married, but am divorced. We had no children, and Chris, my ex's son died last year in a car accident. I have thought of moving back north, but I sure don't miss scraping the ice off the car every morning. I could count the number of times I have had to do that on one hand since living in the south. I do miss cool fall weather. There is a joke here that we have Christmas and summer. School It seems like most of my school days were spent in the music room. Before school orchestra, orchestra for home room, choir for 4th period, Wrighteous for lunch, band for 6th period and marching band after school. I did have fun ! Managed to play a wind, brass, string, and percussion instrument. What! You didn't know I was in the percussion section. No, I wasn't. I played the piano for chorus and choir. The piano is actually a percussion instrament. I am still playing and wondering how in the world I learned the music I played then. Because I teach piano now, and you better believe I figured out the easy ways to play. I sure didn't know how then! Teaching does make sure that you yourself know the basics! I am a much better player and teacher than I was then. I have played some of the songs we did in choir, boy, did he ever challange us. I also remember being in other groups, German club, Radio Club, etc. I have to thank my parents for encouraging me to do lots of fun stuff in high school. I remember my Dad telling me "you'll have your whole life to work, enjoy yourself now". He wasn't kidding. Most of the time, I am juggling not one, no...Expand for more
t two, but three jobs as well as stuff at home. Just in the last couple of years, have I slowed down enough to lighten the load a bit. However, as of last year, I just don't do as much. All three involve music, and two involve teaching. So, I guess, my high school was just a preliminary for what I have been doing for the rest of my life. Having fun through music. I do. I enjoy every day at work. You can't improve on that. College College. I feel like I bounced around a while and finally put together something that resembled a diploma to somebody. My math and science at one school, Old and New Testament at another, lots of history at the last and music throughout. Studied a good deal, made a decent point average. made a couple of good friends, had a lot of fun marching with the Vandy band. worked most of the time throughout. Wouldn't you know in music and preschool? Played for vocalists and instrumentalists, worked in the music library, had a job with the Methodist preschool down the road. Managed to do all that and study too. I am glad I was young then. I don't think I could do it now! I am glad I had the experience and after all, no one can take the sheepskin away once you receive it. Workplace Well, I am still sitting on the floor singing "Old MacDonald had a farm". However, that's what I want to be doing. I have recently accepted a new position with Head Start/ Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten in a Title One School. I lead the children's learning through center based centers, group times, music times, small group activities. It is a challenging job with lots of rewards when I see the children progressing.
