Janice's Story

Life I was born in San Rafael, Calfornia, and went to school at seven different schools around Marin County, including West End Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary. My parents divorced when I was 2-years old, and I lived with my mother and younger sister Jeanne. In 1970, my grandfather died and my grandmother asked us to move to Clear Lake. I went to school at Lucerne from 6th to 8th grade. I graduated from Lucerne Elementary school in 1974, and went to Upper Lake High School, but left in 10th grade. I would have graduated in 1978. Instead, I moved to San Francisco in January, 1976, and finished my education at George Washington High School where I graduated in 1978. In Clear Lake, I went by my mother's maiden name, Berry. My mother, my sister and I lived with my Grandmother Helen Berry at her house on the lake in Lucerne, across from the old Shell station at the end of 6th Street. When I moved to San Francisco, my Dad changed my last name back to his, Neubert. Both my Mom and Dad went to Lucerne Elementary and graduated from Upper Lake High School in 1953. My Mom was Janice Lynn Berry and my Dad was James Delano Neubert. My aunt Barbara and Uncle Nick also graduated from Upper Lake High School. Aunt Barbara is still around in Novato, CA, but my uncle passed a few years back, shortly after my Dad. I have some wonderful memories from Clear Lake, and would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. I graduated from Lucerne Elementary School in 1974. Larry McKinley remembers when we had dances at the school, and we danced together. I did attend Upper Lake High School for my Freshmen year, but left in 1976. I was president of the Freshman class in 1974/75, if you have a yearbook! Remember the Winter Dance with the band called Afton? Today, I'm a high school English teacher, yearbook advisor, and junior class advisor. I also teacher college online. I am married for the 2nd time to a wonderful man, Randall, and we have shared 8 very memorable years so far, I hope I get to keep him until he is very old and grey. He makes me laugh every day, and makes my life so interesting and fun. Together we have seven children, my three sons, his daughter and three sons. We have lots of challenges with our kids, but we love them all. My oldest son James just turned 29 this year. He and his wife live in Alturas, CA, and have two children of their own. James owns an electrical business up there, Prince Electric. My biological mother and my sister Jeanne live in Twin Falls, Idaho, if anyone remembers them. I have a stepmother, Elisabeth, and a step-sister, Elisabeth Ann, who both live in Roseville. My Dad died in 1998, he was a totally wonderful man. My Grandmother died in 1986 just before her 80th birthday. She was the best person in my entire life. I don't know where I would have been without her and I dearly miss her! Moving to San Francisco in 1976 was a TOTAL culture shock! I did eventually find a place to fit in, though. I joined the GWHS swim team and taught Red Cross swimming in the summer. I kept score for several sports with Denise Hall. My first regular job was at Doggie Diner, remember them?? My Dad owned an insurance agency, and my stepmom Elizabeth was an RN at Kaiser. My stepmom was the BEST Mom I could ever wish for! She is in a nursing home now, in Roseville, and I wish I could spend more time with her. She has such a big heart. es! Renee Clark, Kenneth Byrne, Tammy Aramian, Jenny Davis, Denise Hill, Andy Lee, Leo Wong, Marilyn Goucher, Jeff Oswalt, Eric Wynkoop, Patty Keys, Karla Klundt, Steve Smith, Larry McKinley....there are really too many to name....I am still looking for more friends from school: Leslie Sing, Jamie Ceridono, John Kahrig, Bonnie Higgins, Gayle Pugh, Debbie Clark, Phil Thomas (from Visalia), Dana Cisney (from San Jose), Amanda McCollough, Cathy Baker...there are so many memories! If you remember me from school or from Clear Lake or San Francisco, I would love to chat and catch up on what's happened to you since we last saw one another! School The teacher who inspired me the most was my 5th grade teacher in San Rafael. Her name is Doris Youtz. She taught me to love to read, and showed me how cool traveling could be. Her favorite place to travel was Japan, and she went every summer. I just loved being in her class. I had some good friends there, Patty Keys and Cathy Baker. I have found Patty, but would still like to find Cathy. I still keep in touch with Mrs. Youtz, too! In fact, Randall and I just went up to San Rafael to visit with Mrs. Youtz! She is turning 95 years old this year, and she looks GREAT! She plays bocci ball every morning, gardens and is a champion pool player. She has her name on two plaques! We try to get up to Northern California at least once a year to go visit her. In Clear Lake, I'd have to say my favorite teachers were Mr. Cannon and Mr. Lee at Lucerne Elementary. They were funny, always smiling and lots of fun. Great memories there. Workplace Started working for Doggie Diner in 1976....Man, this is a long way from there! Actually, I worked for a fruit stand in Nice in 1973...that was where I learned how to count change. Then I mowed lawns and made dolls. So, I guess you could consider me an entrepreneur! Along the way I worked for Bank of America, a couple of veterinarians, AM International, Gencom Radio Telecommunications, General Dynamics, Hughes Aircraft, La Costa Hotel, Cox Communications....and a few others. I guess I couldn't decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. One thing was constant, I always wanted to write. Before my father died, I'd promised him that I would go back to school. So, in 1996, I did. I got my teaching degree in 2000. Today, I am teaching English, Literature and Communication in the High Desert and online, and I wish I had been teaching all my professional life. I just LOVE what I do! I still want to be a famous writer...you watch, I still believe that I will be!! II have completed a doctorate in education. My goal is to be a creator of new learning ideas for students who find going to school a challenge. There are so many opportunities for kids today. As of this year, we have SEVEN grandchildren! I cannot believe I am a grandmother of SEVEN!! Our favorite pass time is rodeo. We go to Las Vegas every December to attend National Finals Rodeo. We also attend many California rodeos during the year. I am lucky to have a husband who enjoys my hobby, and doesn't mind traveling. When I retire I want to become a famous romance writer, just like my departed friend Patricia Mathews, writing and living on a ranch with horses. We bought the ranch in 2012, so now all I have to do is get busy and write...oh, and buy a few horses...that is our next goal. We dream of traveling to book signings all over the nation....That will be fun!
