Jason's Story

Life After high school, I attended Austin Peay State University, earning my BA in four years. During I my junior year I married a girl from Ashland City, Tenn., I continued my education and finished all my coursework for my MA. In an effort to pay back student loans, I joined the Army. Before entering the service my wife and I divorced. I served four years as a public affairs specialist. I spent most of my enlistment at Fort Campbell, Ky, just north of Clarksville, Tenn. This is where I met my wife, who already had one son, who I promptly adopted at his father's request. My job at Fort Campbell started as a writer/photographer for the post newspaper. I quickly became the editor of the news section of the paper and eventually became the editor of the whole 32 page paper which was subsequently voted the best paper in the Army. During this time my daughter was born. I was promoted to the rank of Sergeant (E-5) and became the noncommissioned officer in charge of a seven soldier public affairs detachment. I deployed with my soldiers to Iraq for the build up and invasion of Iraq ( a war I still feel is unjustifie...Expand for more
d and wrong ). I spent seven months in Iraq as the editor of the Iraqi Destiny a field publication for the Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division, which was voted best field publication in the Army. I then returned to Fort Campbell to end my military service. From there I moved to Heidelberg, Germany and became a civilian public affairs specialist for the U.S. Army in Europe. For 1 1/2 years I was a photographer and writer for U.S. Army Europe often traveling throughout Europe, and Western Asia to cover events. I became the U.S. Army Europe Webmaster, maintaining several sites, but focusing primarily on U.S. Army Europe's public web site. My third child, another son was born in April '05. He was born with some medical problems, which have been largely resolved, but necessitated a move back to Tennessee to be closer to family. I now live in Clarksville and work for The Leaf-Chronicle as the night editor. Since our return to the states we have wanted desperately to live a more earth concious life and to that end spend much of our time outdoors in the garden. That's about it up till now.
