Jason's Story

After high school I attended college in Indiana, Kentucky and completed postgraduate work in California. Following college I worked for IBM a few years until moving on to greener pastures as an independent consultant designing and implementing large-scale distributed software systems. In the early 90's I consulted primarily for JPMorgan and lived in Manhattan (the greatest city in the world). After several years of 80 hour work weeks I needed a change so I sold my house in California and my apartment in Manhattan and shifted my life to Florida. There I consulted exclusively at Florida's largest utility company as their chief systems architect (and had the great fortune to meet my partner Ted). But alas I was doomed again to live a life of ridiculously long work weeks; after four-and-a-half years of that I was ready to give up consulting and we were both ready to leave Florida. So in '97 we moved to San Diego and both went to work for Sony. This was a radical change for us since our professional lives up to that point had been focused on building large-scale software systems. Now we were being asked to develop small-scale embedded computing devices and learn ...Expand for more
a completely new skill set. Fortunately the transition was successful and 10+ years later Ted is responsible for all engineering in the Internet Product Division and I am head of Research and Development for wireless technology. If you own a Sony product newer than 10 years old, there's a good chance we designed some of the technology in it. There is a lot of travel involved with our jobs but so far the 80 hour work weeks have not materialized. Most of you may not realize it but California is actually the state in which I was born. In an act I never forgave them for, my parents moved to Hannibal when I was a child. Part of me always felt like California was my home so it is fitting that I ended up here. Although engineering is my profession, art is my passion; I am an avid painter, sculptor, woodworker and potter. I never see myself retiring only transitioning from the technology industry to the arts. One additional note: I have been getting a lot of questions about the name change and the short answer is this: Eddie was the name my adopted parents decided to call me but Jason is my real name. I have not answered to the name Eddie since I left home in 1983.
