Jason's Story

Life I took the CHSPE to escape Live Oak in 1987 and went to De Anza to study software engineering. As I realized that programming was not going to be a fulfilling career for me, I began doing more and more graphic design work to earn extra money. This turned into a full-time job, and I dropped out of school in early '89. I spent the 90s doing design work for various print shops, marketing departments, and advertising agencies, including Merrill Lynch and Grey Advertising. I moved to Portland, Oregon, got a job offer in Morgan Hill and moved back a year and a half later. That job didn't turn out to be all it was cracked up to be, and I soon discovered Portland had spoiled me for the traffic and heat of the Bay Area. I moved to Portland again. I could always find a good job, but...Expand for more
graphics work was not meaningful enough to me. I really wanted to go back to school in order to obtain a PhD and teach philosophy, but I made too much money to get financial aid. I felt like I was stuck. When the economy went south, I was laid off and couldn't find another job to save my life. I worked as a graveyard clerk at a 7-11 for about a year. This dropped my income to a level where I qualified for financial aid to go back to school, so I quit working and enrolled in PCC. I'm still doing freelance work to supplement my "income," and my standard of living has taken a hit, but it's all worth it. I'm really enjoying school and looking forward to a career that really means something to me. Also, when it's not summer, I teach debate at a few local middle schools, which is a blast.
