Jay's Story
School
Attended Kindergarten at Mrs. Roberts, then elementary school at Ludlow Elementary in the Armory until we moved into the new Elementary School/Gymnasium building in the third grade. Fourth through sixth grade was on the first floor of the BRHS building. Junior High was on the second floor. I was in Ludlow through my sophomore year, then we moved to Springfield as the Route 103 contruction project took our house. I graduated from Springfield in 1966. While at SHS, I ran the mile and 2-mile in Track and Cross Country. We won the State Championship in Cross Country in the fall of 1965.
Workplace
I started working when I was about 9-10 years old, delivering flyers for Kuzma's Western Auto store, then the A&P grocery store. I made $3.00 for each delivery cycle and delivered all over the village of Ludlow. Shortly after that, I started a Grit paper route and TV Guide delivery. When I was 11, I was asked to take over the Rutland Herald route that I lived on and delivered the papers for 3 years. In 1962, I helped renovate the Okemo Inn, which was the first house my family had lived in when we moved to Vermont from Massachuse...Expand for more
tts. In 1963, I was asked to be the dishwasher for Ruth's Lunch on Route 103, just north of Ludlow. They tried to stay open for the winter that year, but the building wasn't insulated well enough for it and they closed for the season after Christmas. In 1964, I helped build my parents home in the Dutton District area of Springfield. The following summer, I worked for Warren Child Construction building my grandmother's house (next door to ours), then additional home renovation projects and eventually building custom log cabins.
I worked for Grand Union as a stockboy and grocery bagger during the school year and returned to Child Construction during the summers for the next two years. In 1967, after injuring my back, I worked as a dishwasher at The Old Tavern at Grafton for three months before heading off to Marine Corps boot camp. I served in the Marine Corps for 21 years and retired (see military bio or Where I've Been). I then worked for RAIL Company in San Diego for three months, then SEMCO for three years.
Since I now had my degrees in Computer Information Science, I applied and was hired by IBM in Rochester, MN, where I am today.
