Jay's Story
Life
Born into a military family at Perrin AFB, near Denison, TX, Lived in Morocco, N. Africa until I was 4. Coming back to the States then, we lived in Alexandria, VA, where I started school (K-1), Moving again to Denison, I attended 2nd grade there, and then moved to Brownsville, TX for 3rd grade. Another move took us to the Irving, TX area (near Dallas) for grades 4-10. I was at Irving High between 1967-1969 My final move (while growing up) was to Tulsa, OK, where I graduated from Edison High in 1971. Going on to the University of Tulsa, I got a petroleum engineering degree, and went to work in New Orleans for Gulf Oil in 1975. They moved me to Houma, LA in 1976, and the to Houston, in 1977, where I have lived since then. Anybody connected to the energy industry can testify to the job uncertainties, and I am surely no different. I left Gulf in 1982 after getting my MBA at Houston Baptist Univ., and worked for the Italian company AGIP (now ENI) until 1986. I also got married in that same year, to Karen Ann Timmons Dyer. Her only son was 15 when we were married, and we have no children of our own. I worked at M-I Drilling Fluids from 1987 until 1990. I became a drilling consulting engineer for Amoco then, but that ended in 1991. Thoroughly disillusioned, I left the oil industry for 6 years, and had my own small business working with companies and individuals who needed computer assistance. I worked with a wide variety of business, from ocean shipping lines to lawyers, realtors, wholesale jewelers, and small manufacturing firms. I gradually added telecommunications equipment to computers, and installed, serviced and supported fax servers, and phone systems. In July, 1997, I rejoined the oil business which is still my profession. I am currently a consulting engineer and have done jobs in Mumbai (Bombay)India, Aberdeen, Scotland, and Nigeria recently. 2 years, though, we have lived on the west side of Houston. Karen and I have 2 granddaughters now, and stay busy with them, and our church and home activities. Please feel free to contact us anytime you are visiting in the greater Houston area.
College
All of my college experiences were either my undergraduate days at the University of Tulsa, where I attended on a 4-year honors scholarship in Petroleum Engineering. Graduation took place as scheduled in May of 1975. Four years after graduation, and while working for Gulf Oil in Houston, I attended the Houston Baptist University executive MBA program, which lasted for 23 months. I finished in August of 1980. It was an intense time, and very few memories have endured. Both college experiences have played a crucial part in determining who I am today. I have no plans to ever go any further into more education.
Workplace
Most of the pertinent details of my work bio are contained in the later part of my "Life Bio", but if you have any quetions that have not been adequately address there, then please write to me and let me know.
Military
Although, as the oldest son of a military officer's family, I had aspired to a lifetime of miltary service, my plans wewre not able to be realized. At the same time that my contemporaries were wanting draft deferrments, or worried about their draft lottery numbers, I had to carry a draft classification of 4F. That meant that the surgeon general of the United States would have had to personally signed a release to allow me to serve in any branch of the armed forces of t he United States. I have only partial sight in my right eye as the result of an optic nerve infection that left a scar which impairs my sight. My depth perception was most affected. As a result, I don't play any sports where vision plays a crucial role. Military service was permanently ruled out for me since May, 1969.
