Jay's Story
"Most of the time, weirdness is the best defense."
School:
Oh how I hated high school! I was so shy I could have died. It was a real surprise to go back for our 15 year reunion and have so many people talking to me like they really knew who I was - I felt invisible in school.
College:
I was all set to go - accepted at SUNY Potsdam, roommate assigned, refrigerator deposit paid, loans secured for the first year's tuition - and I realized that I would have NO money for the second year.
Good ol' Dad wasn't going to pay any of it; he said I would just waste his money, partying my time away (bless his heart, he was probably really on to something there, given the way I spent the next 18 years).
So, I chickened out and went to work, figuring I'd save up my money and go the next year. Hah! Dad was right. I partied all my money away, for years and years. No Potsdam for me, though friends of mine did go. Too bad. I really looked forward to the icy North. And people think Rochester is cold ... but by the time I was 38 I had moved to Florida for a job and got stuck there.
Workplace:
After high school, I eschewed college (lost my refrigerator deposit on that, but I bet the guy who was supposed to be my roommate was glad to have the room to himself) and went straight to work. Who needs a degree in Chemistry anyway ;) Apparently not me. As a result I spent the next 8 years totin' boxes and pulling pallets off trucks.
Finally got a break and ended up in electronic engineering, designing circuit boards. Still no college degree - I did take a 10 week course in basic electronics - but when you're motivated you can learn all you need on your own. Too bad I still partied like it was high school.
After 6 years designing boards at DSI in Fairport, I was laid off (partying problem); went to Sigma in Medina, NY, where I designed boards for pollution control devices; then EMA in Henrietta, NY, more board design and technical support for the software; [rehab break]; started working as a contractor: Square D in Nashville, TN, designing smart circuit breaker bo...Expand for more
xes; Sparton Electronics in DeLeon Springs, FL, designing sonar; then back to Rochester for a really bad two-week job (it wasn't supposed to be only two weeks).
Finally I knew I had to get my act together or get homeless again. Having experienced homelessness once before, I took the better route and returned to rehab. After an 8-month program I moved to Tallahassee, FL, where I worked for a major defense contractor for three and a half years. They finally had to let me go because I started drinking at night and missed too much time. I soon became homeless again, and remained that way until 2008.
Aug. 2006 update: I've been hired on at the local community college in the IT department.
Jun. 2007 update: lost my college job due to state budget cuts. A lot of other people were let go as well.
Jan. 2008 update: off to rehab
Apr. 2008 update: living in New Port Richey, FL (near Tampa) and looking for work again.
Nov. 2008 update: I met a wonderful woman last May. We moved in together in June and are very happy. Still not working, but I am finally getting leads on design work again. I miss the creative atmosphere and sense of accomplishment.
Dec. 2008 update: My entire immediate family came to visit a couple of days after Christmas. I hadn't seen my son for five years and had never before met my son-in-law. It was the best Christmas present I have ever received.
Jan. 2009 update: Our dog Sage died on January 4. It has been a hard day for us. We buried her in the back yard.
Apr. 2010 update: Still in love with Lisa. We have a new dog and I am working part-time as a butler.
Feb. 2012 update: Living in the mountains of NC with Lisa, within the confines of Pisgah National Forest, just a couple of miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Heaven on Earth.
Sep. 2013 update: Lisa passed away unexpectedly last October. I'm still living in the same house out in the boonies, across the street from the Shining Rock Wilderness, just me and the dog. At least once a week I take a hike up the Big East Fork or Shining Creek trails; they are both 2.5 miles from my house.
