Jay's Story
Life
My dad was a navy man. I was obligated to follow along. However, each place I lived afforded me with good friends and good memories.
San Diego has always been my heart home. Even though I have not lived there in 30 years, I have lived close enough in south Los Angeles county (La Mirada) and work in Orange County (Brea), to visit whenever I want. Go Padres.
Started high school at Hilltop in Chula Vista. Quite disappointed that my dad got orders to Hawaii in my sophomore year. The move turned out to be the most rewarding and life changing experience for me. It was at Hawaii Baptist Academy that my faith in Christ started to take hold. I truly appreciate the faculty and the students that challenged me to consider God's love through Jesus. I have never been the same.
Sorry to say that I have lost touch with many from the Hawaii days. Several of my great friends have passed away. From Hilltop, Jim Watkins and David Votaw left this earth. From Hawaii Baptist, we lost Steve Bryan, Rick Mills, Tricia Byrd, and Mark Nakamura. After high school, Rick Mills and I travelled off to Utah State University.
The sad moment of my life, my mom's illness and death, caused me to regroup with my family in San Diego. This move allowed me to reconnect with several Hilltop friends in Chula Vista. Enjoyed working with Greg Tarpenning and Bill Mc Carrol at Sear's candy department making popcorn. However, I had to leave that stellar c...Expand for more
areer behind and get on to graduation at San Diego State.
Two churches in the Chula Vista area had a deep impact on me during my college days. St. Mark's Lutheran Church (Pastor Troy Mooneyham) and First Baptist Church (Pastor Clay Ford). Besides the deepening of my Christian faith, I met my wife of 45 years and counting, Beth Peverley (Mar Vista grad). Many encouraged me to seek out a ministry track in life. Off to Minnesota to Luther Theological Seminary, and since Minnesota is cold (I am totally a warm weather guy), I invited Beth to marry me and go along.
Of our marriage we have had 2 daughters and a son. Hard to believe they are grown and now Beth and I are enjoying the blessing of being grandparents, 7 in all. The family all live close.
After 20 years pastoring 2 Lutheran churches I went to work as a financial consultant for Thrivent Financial. Wondered when the business degree would come in handy. Enjoyed this career for 20 years. I am now retired and have no trouble filling up 24 hours a day.
I use to run a lot. However, marathon and half marathon days are over.. Do like to play golf but am embarrassed that I make no progress toward excellence in the sport.
Beth and I have an Airstream trailer and belong to the South Coast CA airstream club. Enjoy wine and socializing with others.
As Bob Hope use to sing, "Thanks for the memories". Truly hope you have found joy and peace in your days since the days past.
