Myra's Story
Although I grew up as Myra Campbell, when I married Frank Ballew in 1978 and moved to California, I started using my middle name - Jean.
Although I graduated with a degree in Social Work and Spanish, I ended up in education after our move to California. I went to Cal State San Bernardino to take the courses needed for my teaching certificate while teaching at Fontana Christian School.
After moving back to Maryland for a few years and teaching at Montrose Christian School, we moved to Winona Lake, Indiana, where I worked as an editor of Sunday School curriculum for the Free Methodist Church. When our church headquarters moved to Indianapolis in 1990, I became the Director of Curriculum, which involved a lot of travel all over the country. During this time I became a published author (mostly curriculum) and Frank, an artist, illustrated a lot of the materials I wrote. here I became the children's pastor at the McPherson Free Methodist Church. My elementary ed degree was a real help - I don't see how you can be an effective children's pastor without one! I also started teaching at Central Christian College part-time.
I started working on my Ph.D. at Kansas State University and was a full-time graduate teaching assistant for two of the happiest years of my life. Upon completion of my coursework, I got a job teaching teacher ed courses at McPherson College. But I couldn't get my dissertation done while working at a full-time job. So I am presently substitute teaching and also teaching just one course one day a week at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, while I work on the dissertation.
After living in McPherson for a few years we finally bought our dream house - a lovely old (105+ years) Victorian house with big front porch and a lamppost in front. In fact, we live in the "old" part of town - one thing we love about our tree-lined street are the antique street lamps lining it.
