Jean's Story
After HS I worked at AT&T for a year way downtown on Canal Street. Not exactly what I wanted to do so I decided to go to Secretarial School for a year. I landed a sweet position at Shell Oil Co at 30 Rockefeller Center, NYC! Very exciting part of the city and not such a terrible commute! Married my HS sweetheart in 1970 and was blessed with my first daughter, Bonnie Jean, a year later. . We moved into our first house in Elmont, (LI) NY in 1974 when I was expecting our second daughter, Erin. We raised our family there for 15 years. I was fortunate to be a "stay at home" Mom until 1976 when Erin, turned 2. My Mom said she would watch the girls once "out of diapers!!" I took her up on it! I then worked PT for a doctor in New Hyde Park. We later moved to a house in New Hyde Park and my Mom moved in with us :-) We lived there for 10 years when my husband announced he got an awesome offer for a position in San Francisco, CA (1998.) Here I was 50 yrs old and moving across the country! We lived in Walnut Creek, CA (a suburb of SF) for 3 yrs. He then was relocated back to NY; I loved CA and didn't want to move back! My daughter Erin still lives there.
Upon returning to NY ...Expand for more
in early, 2001, we first rented an apt in lower Manhattan as my husband would be working on Wall St; this way we could take our time house-hunting. As fate would have it, we were living there on 9/11/01. Our apt. was 3 blks from the WTC & that's a whole story in itself. We were displaced from our apt & lived in a hotel for 3 mos. until we moved into our new home in Roslyn Hts, Long Island. I then returned to work for the same doctor again. Two years later, hubby gets sent to FL. We decided to majorly downsize now that the children were out and my Mom had passed. We purchased a 2 bdrm condo in the Fort Lauderdale area. It is such a pleasure to have a pool I don't need to tend to, landscaping I don't have to worry about and no snow to shovel. An occasional hurricane at best but God has blessed us with calm summer weather so far! Only downside is my 2 grandsons are in Albany, NY. I visit often but it's not the same as having them nearby. God has been good to me; life has had it's ups and downs but I believe every rose has it's thorns. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! I thank God for my gift of Faith, it is what gives me Joy and Peace, I wish all of you the same!
