Jean's Story
Life
Married Dick Gilbert, one child, Lisa. Dick died in 1979. Lived in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Santa Barbara. Got PhD in medical anthropology, 1980. Had a research chair at UCLA for 8 years, was director of cultural medicine at Kaiser Permanente 11 years. Taught graduate seminars as visiting professor at Cal State Long Beach after that. Now have a private consulting firm, Cultures in the Clinic, and work only when something really interesting comes along. Spend my time traveling, doing walking and sailing tours, road trips. Working on a couple of books, one to be published by Jossey-Bass in Jan. 2013. Daughter Lisa, formerly a Health Educator, lives in Montana with her partner and my little grandson on 20 acres of near wilderness. while we were there, Skipper Jenckes and wife Linda visited. We also spent a beautiful two weeks cruising around French Polynesia. Since work takes me to D.C. a lot, I see the Jenckes fairly often, and Beverly and I try to have at least one weekend in New York a year to satisfy our foodie urges which are pretty severe. In the spring of 2012, Bev and I spent a great weekend with Skipper on our way to Montecello. Old friends are the best. Ric Brecheisen makes sure that many of us stay in touch with some pretty absurd emails al least once a week. After 20 years in L.A., I'm glad to be living in Santa Barbara. It's a beautiful small city with lots to do and a perfect climate for gardening, which I love. Life is good and lots of fun, health is excellent. Lots of beach walking and Pilates help a lot. Family, friends, books, science, opera, conversation, wine, kitties, food ,and travel remain my major joys in life.
