Jean's Story

My husband Richart Harris (class of '71) and I moved from Hyde Park to Murrells Inlet, SC In May of 2020. I worked for almost 26 years at the Poughkeepsie Journal in Advertrising and Marketing and after taking a early retirement buyout from the Journal in 2015, I took a position as Director of Events for the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce until I retired in Dec. of 2019. We have two daughters and one grandaughter, Kate and two step grandchildren, Caroline and Jack. After high school, I went to Bennett College in Millbrook for Interior Design. Rich and I were married in 1974 right after I graduated with an Associates degree from Bennett and he with his Associates from Dutchess Community College. We lived in Poughkeepsie until 1977 when Rich joined the Army and we moved to Ft. Stewart, GA and then to Ft. Benning, GA where he attended Officer Candidate School. From there, we went to Ft. Sill, OK until 1986, when we moved back to Hyde Park after Rich left the Army. Having always been involved in some form of art or design, I went to work as a Visual Merchandising Spec...Expand for more
ialist for what was then G. Fox (which became Filene's and now Macys). I worked for G. Fox from 1987 to 1990 and truly loved the job for the first 2 years. The last year, as Manager, was not as satisfying simply because they had become very cookie cutter in their merchandising efforts and I was allowed very little creative input. It was time to move on and so it was that I became employed as the very first Creative Advertising Developer for the Poughkeepsie Journal which is owned by Gannett. As Creative Advertising Developer, I would accompany a sales executive to visit advertisers to develop campaigns to meet the advertiser's needs. Then I took a position as the Special Sections Coordinator for about a year prior to joining the Market Development Department as the Research Communications Manager and then promoted to Marketing Manager in 2007. I was offered an early retirement buyout in October 2015 which I happily took and after a few months decided I wasn't really ready to retire and then received a call inviting me to try a position with the Chamber. Things happen for a reason!
