Jeanette's Story

Life After finishing high school, I began my dream of working in Chicago only to realize that I needed to get a college degree to be able to do what I really wanted to. I did graduate from Purdue and Calumet College and am currently a high school Computer/Business teacher at Morton H.S. in Hammond. My life is pretty fast-paced with raising 4 children (Alex-16, Helena-14, Camille-11, and Chloe-10) by myself, working a full-time job, and 2 part-time jobs along with all of the activities that they are involved in. I still live in the area (Munster, IN) and enjoy myself, despite the congestion every day! All of my family has moved away from here but we still keep in touch and visit each other regularly at our parents in DeMotte, IN. My older brother (Jeff) lives in LaPorte,IN and my younger brother (Jim) lives in Georgia. My sister and her 10 kids, yes 10!!, lives in Danville, IN. We are still close and even our kids are very close, spending lots of time together. Hope everyone is doing well in whatever endeavors they have moved on to as well. Thanks for reading this and god bless!! School I am not sure who my biggest crush was in high school, but I do know that it was Mr. Mack who inspired me the most. I really enjoyed my high school years and yes I would do it all over again. Some of the funniest memories are really ones that you had to be there. The happiest memories are many, with many different people. The craziest memories were with the theater, music, and gymnastics folks, and ones I'd rather not talk about. But what I remember most is the wonderful friends that I had at the time and what an impact they made on my life. One of my favo...Expand for more
rite memories was being the first class to graduate on the football field. That was a great ending to our new beginning. College Although I consider my college education invaluable, I mostly remember the acquaintances and friendships that were developed and continued. Yes, many of us pulled all-nighters and turned things in at the last minute or even the last second, but these days were the best for socialization purposes. When will you ever find such carefree, wild and fun times all at one time in your life. I know I really enjoyed these days and nights and the great education that I learned both in and out of the classroom. Workplace Yes, I began as an administrative support staff (secretary) out of high school only to realize that the real money was in the "professional" positions that required a degree. Taking a nearly 2 year hiatus from school, I slowly began my first degree in Finance(1988) and completed my second degree in Accounting(1989)all while working at Amoco in Chicago. But, in 1991 I decided I wanted to become a teacher and went back to school to get a teaching endorsement in Business Education at Calumet College and began teaching at Bishop Noll Institute about a year after finishing this. I also decided to go back and get an endorsement in Computers and a Math Minor from Purdue and then landed a teaching job at Morton High School where I have been for the past 13 years. I teach Computer Applications, Accounting, and Personal Finance classes, as well as being the Building Teachers Union Representative and serving as the High School Trustee on that Executive Board. I love teaching and am glad I changed careers years ago.
