Jeanne's Story
Married, enjoying life in AZ... After graduating HHS, I attended college in Texas, where I ended up teaching jr high and high school for a total of 7 years. Meanwhile, I met and married my husband while we were in graduate school. Then we moved to sunny Tucson, Arizona, where palo verde trees and bougainvillia bloom instead of dogwoods and azaleas, and we make jelly out of cactus fruit instead of strawberries. I home schooled our two kids for a while and then taught a few years at the local middle school. Now the kids are out of the house, attending graduate school at the University of Arizona, but I keep busy taking care of our dog, three tortoises, one turtle, and five chickens.
My dear husband is an engineer for a defense contractor and has a zillion hobbies on the side-- everything from photography to woodworking, painting and robotics. He keeps life interesting!
School
My favorite high school times were spent backstage or in the music room... Derick Milford's rich tenor voice melted me clear to my toes... I don't remember much about the academics, but I couldn't have made it through high school sane without the music classes. Cherished memories: standing with a group of friends, singing after a choir concert, watching the snow fall from the shelter of the parking deck at Regency Square mall; coming in to school as the marching band practiced on the field; si...Expand for more
nging around the piano in the choir room, and the choir trips to Boston, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta.
College was a blur of work, classes and student teaching. Grad school was a little better although I managed to drop out, right between finishing the course work and writing a thesis... so the only "M" title I earned that year was "Mrs."
Workplace
I taught two years in a junior high, then I served a year in a private school that ate me for lunch (thanks loads, guys!); another four years of a public high school before dropping out to be a mom. Two years teaching in a private preschool was fun, but my favorite job ever is the one I had 2003-2009: teaching my own two kids at home. We completed 6 years of homeschool so I guess it's the longest running job I've ever had! It was fun while it lasted. The year my son started high school they both ditched me for the public school-- but it's just as well because that same year ('09) I was diagnosed with breast cancer and spent the next couple of years dealing with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and reconstruction. Later I went another round with uterine cancer, but only needed surgery for that. Meanwhile, I got bored so I taught 6th grade math and science for three years in the middle school just down the road from my house. Then I did three years of private tutoring and homeschool consulting. Now I'm retired!
