Jeff's Story

Life Born in Ottawa, I moved to Kanata in February 2007 after a 36-year absence from the Ottawa area, stayed a couple of years, and fled "home" to the GTA. I now reside in Unionville, ON. My daughter Kelly recently completed her teacher's degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia after doing her undergrad at Western. My son Michael is attending Ryerson. Having escaped the snowy Ottawa winters, I have managed to live in Kingston (wet and raw winters) London (middle of a snow belt), Edmonton (near the arctic circle), Chicago (the windy city), and Toronto (hot and humid in the summer, cold and wet in the winter) and endured the rain and clouds of British Columbia's lower mainland. My community roles have included council member of the Toronto Board of Trade for five years, governor of Variety Village (athletic and recreational facility for special needs youth), and past president of the Toronto Junior Board of Trade. I was the Chairman of Canada’'s university football championship - the Vanier Cup - in 1998 and 1999, and am still active photographing university football games each fall. I have served as a member of the Queen’s University Board of Trustees, the Queen's Centre Executive Committee, the Queen's University Council on Athletics, and the Queen’s Football Club and was founding President of the Queen's Bands Booster Club. You can view my latest Queen's football, athletics and Bands photos at pbase - dot -com / goldengaelsphotos School After an early academic career in Ottawa at Hilson Avenue Public School, and D. Roy Kennedy Public School, and getting kicked out of Sunday School, I attended Nepean High School from 1966-1970. Key activities at Nepean were music (Orchestra, Intermediate and Senior Bands, and the Dance Band) and football. So why doesn't Nepean have a football team anymore? I missed my fall commencement due to a conflict with the 1970 Queen's-Manitoba College Bowl semifinal game in Winnipeg which Queen's ultimately failed to win in overtime. College I attended Queen's University from 1970-73 graduating with a general Arts degree. I then attended the Univ...Expand for more
ersity of Western Ontario's School of Business graduating with an MBA in 1975. While at Queen's, I was an active member of the Queen's University Bands (trumpet) and was the first elected Bands Manager. Surprisingly given my short three-year tenure at Queen's, I have been highly involved with Queen's serving in various Alumni Association roles and currently as a member of the Board of Trustees and on the Queen's Centre Executive Committee. I was the founding President of the Queen's Bands Booster Club and initiated the campaign to re-uniform the Bands which had its successful conclusion in 2003. I am a proud supporter of the Queen's Athletics program, primarily the football team, for which I have served as a team photographer since 2001 missing only two games in eight seasons. We recently won the 2009 Vanier Cup against Calgary. Workplace In December 2006, I joined CMA Holdings/MD Financial as the Sr. Vice President -– Human Resources, marking the first time I ever worked in Ottawa. In July 2009 I moved back to the Toronto area in Unionville and have my own consulting firm, Growth Alchemy Group which focuses on corporate growth and organizational performance. In my early career I held senior human resources positions with Imperial Oil (in Edmonton and Toronto), AlliedSignal, now Honeywell (in Toronto and Chicago), American Express (in Toronto) and Systemhouse, now HP/ EDS (in Toronto). I then joined McKinsey & Company’ in Toronto as an organization specialist, and was a founding leader of McKinsey's global Growth & Innovation practice. As such, I was dedicated to helping clients kickstart, accelerate and/or sustain profitable growth. I served clients in a broad array of industries and geographies to raise growth aspirations and build organizational commitment, develop growth strategies, build new businesses, organize for growth, and build the organizational capacity to grow. Immediately following McKinsey I was Sr. Vice President of Human Resources at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games, responsible for HR, volunteers, accreditation, language skills (ha ha) and inclusivity.
