Jeff's Story
I graduated college with a BA in Environmental Sciences, after a little European travel and brief spell substitute teaching in the Camden school district. Then, fresh from graduation, I taught GED math and science in Camden for 2 years. Saved my nickels, traveled to Alaska in 1975 and never returned to NJ, except for visits. Set up my tent in Anchorage with a box of dehydrated food and $700 to my name. Pumped gas for 2 weeks, then went to work for the State of Alaska and was hard at it until I retired in 2006.
I've had the privilege to travel statewide in various capacities; as a fish biologist, habitat biologist, environmental biologist, ecologist, and environmental specialist. In 1989, within 24 hours of the incident, I was face-to-face with the Exxon Valdez where it landed on Bleigh Reef. Since 1996, my responsibilities were a bit more administrative in nature, managing data and people, as opposed to doing science in the field, and that was AOK by me. In May, 2005, I was Acting Water Quality Assessment & Monitoring Program Manager and retired from State government in September, 2006.
Post-retirement, in 2006 I took an Anatomy & Physiology college course. ÃÂ Survived well enough, but decided that pursuing a second career in nursing was not the best available use of my limited time and resources. So in early 2007, I was sharpening skates, mounting cross-country ski bindings, assembling and repairing bicycles and fitness equipment on a part-time basis. Since then I've done some part-time environmental consulting for 2-3 years related to the cruise ship industry in Alaska. ÃÂ I've also worked full-time gigs lasting a year or more with Lockheed Martin and the US Coast Guard. ÃÂ I've also popped and sold gourmet popcorn in the summer of 2012 at my daughter's gourmet popcorn shop right here in Juneau!

ave raised 5 children; 4 girls and a boy. As of November 2012, their ages are: 30, 28, 26, 24 & 15. The girls have all graduated college or a certificated program. Daughter number 1 (Terra) is is our business entreprenuer, lives in Juneau, married to Chris and they are expecting their first child. Daughter number 2 (Joanna) is married to Tommy, lives in Las Vegas and is currently a stay-at-home mom raising Tyler, our first grandson. Daughter number 3 (Jamie) lives in Juneau and works in the home health care field and daughter number 4 is in Anchorage finishing up her BS degree while working part-time as a Dental Hygienist. Our 15 year old boy (Jason) is athletic and good with math and science. A sophomore in high school now, he loves soccer, downhill skiing, fishing and the outdoors. Currently thinking about a career in mechanical engineering and 2 inches taller than his parents.
Although Kristin has a degree in Fisheries Biology and worked in the field part-time on and off over the years, she was largely a stay-at-home mom and home schooled our kids. Part of the reason I retired was to let her finish her studies and clinical work to become a certified direct entry midwife. She received her license in 2010 and has been practicing midwifery at the Juneau Family Health and Birth Clinic ever since.
Kristin and I like to hike, camp, fish and cross-country ski; actually anything to get outdoors so gardening and home maintenance are two other mainstays. We are active in our church and enjoy spending time with friends; going out to dinner, hiking a trail, hanging out in a hot tub or sauna. Life is good in the Last Frontier, yet not without challenges, and Kristin and I are still thinking about what we want to do when we grow up and where we want to spend our "retired" years, but it's looking more and more like Juneau, Alaska will work just fine.
