Jeff's Story

Life Jul 08 Update - The Air Force moved me out to the East Coast. I now work for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in Washington D.C. If you make it out this way, send me an email so we can get together. Wow! I can't believe it's been 26 years since I graduated from Glenburn High School (Go Panthers!). A lot of things have happened since then. After graduating from Glenburn in 1981 I went to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado where I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 and got my commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force (Go Air Force!). I finished undergraduate navigator training at Mather Air Force Base in California (near Sacramento) in 1986, which is where I met and dated my wife, who I married in 1988. After graduating from Nav School I got an assignment to Grissom AFB in Indiana, where I was stationed from 1987 - 1993. During that time I flew in the KC-135, which is a tanker aircraft that provides aerial refueling to other Air Force and Navy jets. I really enjoyed my time at Grissom. I got to travel all over the world, met a lot of great friends, and got to fly special operations air refueling missions during the invasion of Panama and also during Operation Desert Storm. In 1993 I was lucky enough to get picked to go to the First Airlift Squadron at Andrews AFB, Maryland just outside of Washington D.C. I flew in the big blue and white Boeing 707s that carried the Vice President, First Lady, Secretary of State, Sec Def, Senators, and Congressmen. I also got to do a few back up missions for the President's Air Force One trips while I was there. Andrews AFB was easily the best assignment I've had during my AF career. During the 5 1/2 years I was there I went on over 150...Expand for more
trips, traveled to 97 different countries, and met people and saw places that I never imagined I would get the opportunity to see. While I was stationed at Andrews AFB, I also went to Grad School at Central Michigan University, where I received my Masters Degree in Public Administration. In 1999 I got an assignment to Stuttgart, Germany where I gave up my wings for 3 1/2 years and worked at the U.S. European Command Headquarters. I really loved that assignment too, but mainly because of the traveling I got to do on the weekends and the vacations we got to take to so many amazing places in Europe. In 2002, for the first time during my AF career, I got an assignment back to North Dakota, where I am still currently stationed at Grand Forks AFB, and once again flying in the KC-135. My 2 boys love it here. My older son is a sophmore at Grand Forks Central, and my younger son is a 6th grader at the school on base. Now that we're back in ND, both of them want to go and see Grandma, their cousins, and their aunt and uncles all of the time, so we take trips to Minot quite often to see them. Since coming back to ND I've really gotten into running and enjoy it a lot. I have run 5 marathons in the last 5 years, including the Trestle Valley marathon in Minot. Why they have that marathon in April is beyond me -- I almost froze to death when I ran it in 2004! (BTW, I saw Mike Larson (Class of 85?) helping out with the marathon when I ran it that year) Well, this diatribe has run on quite a bit longer than I thought it would. I would love to hear from anyone that can spare a minute or two to send me a note or message. Let me know when the next All School Reunion or Class of '81 get-together will be! Take care until then!
