Jeff's Story

After too many years and losing touch with too many friends in too many places, I decided to reconnect with the folks I knew in my pre-career years. I guess the event that started me feeling this way was a reunion with a college buddy of mine last summer. Scott is, and was, a great friend. We only spent an afternoon and evening reminiscing, but we shared a bunch of laughs about some of the silly and stupid stuff that happened to us in college. What was really nice was to be reminded of some stuff I had long forgotten. Scott, thanks for reminding me of Scotty K. and his crazy ways. I'm hoping the high school and college friends I find on Classmates.com will be as helpful in jump-starting my memory banks. Some memories from those formative years that stick in my mind are: 1. High school. The last day of HS. My car wouldn't start before we left after lunch. But while visiting Ms. Turner, she loaned me her MG, so I could run and collect the tools necessary to get my car running again. She was always a super lady. 2. High school. I don't remember which summer it occurred, but Driver's Ed in the HS gravel parking lot was a hoot. The Chevy Monte Carlos had brake pedals on the passenger side... two students per car. The Driver's Ed instructor stood in the parking lot like a traffic controller. I remember stepping on the passenger brake a few inopportune times (on purpose of course... hahahaha), which made the student driver appear spastic. Looking back I'm sure the instructor knew EXACTLY who the spastic one was :) 3. High school. That same Driver's Ed course had the instructor in the front passenger seat. The second student was in the back seat. The drill was called (as I remember) "controlled skidding". We were instructed to accelerate to about 50 mph on the paved road adjacent to the HS football field visitor stands. When the instructor signalled, the student driver was to lock the brakes and come to a stop. Everything went well until I was going home that day. I had a friend in the car on a dirt road a short distance from the house. I learned about the effects of road crown on the trajectory of a skidding vehicle that day... into the ditch I went. I can't remember if he ever road with me again... 4. High school. Something we don't see today... hunter safety being taught in HS. Coach ??? gave us a life lesson in loaded firearms. His young son and he were in his truck. His son reached for the gun in the rifle rack, and to his surprise, found out what happens when you pull the trigger on a loaded gun. Coach said he coul...Expand for more
dn't hear for quite some time after that. The hole in the cab sheet metal was another reminder once his hearing returned. 5. Junior high. My shop class project was a moon crescent shaped something or another. I remember that thing like it was yesterday, but I can't remember what exactly it was. The other shop project I remember was the brick laying we did. I think we put sugar in the mortar to prevent it from hardening too much, so it could be knocked apart after we were done. 6. Junior high. In PE, the stage at one end of the basketball court had some games similar to foosball, but it was on the floor and you used broomsticks to hit the ball through a series of partitions with holes in them. I guess that explanation makes no sense, but you had to be there... 7. Junior high. Oh, those wonderful Civil Defense films and fun drills... like that would help us in the event of a nuclear bomb =8^O 8. Junior high. Our Civics class project where we performed a mock trial. Being a lawyer at that age was hell! 9. High school. Cathy Pickett's sign language talent segment in the SHHS Miss Sylvan Hills pageant. She performed the song "Sounds of Silence" in sign language. It was awesome. 10. Georgia Tech. All those Navy Drill Team memories, including our two days spent marching in New Orleans Mardi Gras parades. And then those evenings at Pat O'Briens... Ouraaaaah!!! 11. Georgia Tech and University of Idaho. ALL those college pranks... man-o-man, what a great time! 12. Georgia Tech. Living in Smith Hall... eating breakfast at the hole in the wall across the street (What was the name of that place??? Junior's???)... eating hotdogs at the V... that place was amazing. 13. Georgia Tech. Partying at the Limelight til the sun came up... didn't they film some of "The Slugger's Wife" at the Limelight? That place was wild. 14. Georgia Tech. Playing pool and table tennis with the Chiefs. Many a hour between class was spent perfecting our game there. When the weather was nice, the softball games with the trash cans of "Black Label" nearby made for some fun times. 15. U of I. Moscow Madness Run... the first and last mountain bike race I entered. Damn near killed me. 16. Georgia Tech. Driving the SAE Mini Baja into the library fountain to see if it would float. Good thing it was done late at night... hahahaha Well.. you get the point. I wish I could remember more details about the above stuff and others I've not mentioned. If you remember these and want to share memories, let me know. I'd love to hear from you. Regards, Jeff
