Jeffrey's Story

Life After graduating from high school, I joined the Air Force. Spent 21 years before retiring in September 1997. Attended law school part-time while working as a Human Resources Director during the day. I graduated law school in May 2002 and passed the bar exam that summer. I worked in a small law firm for about year and a half, then opened my own practice. I was a solo attorney from 2004 until November 2017. at which time I took a new job with ProKids in Cincinnati. I represent Guardians ad Litem (GAls) and Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) in court cases. GALs and CASAs are advocates for abused and neglected children, and make recommendations to the court as to the children's best interest. My wife and I live in a small, rural community outside Dayton, Ohio. My wife, Elaine, is an information technology manager for a large health care organization. She's an expert in Agile, a framework for delivery of IT deliverables. Don't ask.me to explain Agile. That stuff is way over my head. In addition to her full-time job, Elaine is a professor at Miami (of Ohio) University in the school of Interactive Media Studies. We both have sons from our prior marriages. The oldest is a Border Patrol agent and is stationed in Tucson, Arizona. He really enjoys that job and he loves living in Arizona. The younger son is in the Army Reserve and also works as a Regional Sales Manager for Verizon. That's enough about my family and me. I would love to hear from my classmates, friends, and the great people I worked with in the Air Force. Send me an e-mail and let me know how you're doing. Workplace I'm an attorney in Cincinnati, Ohio and practice exclusively in Juvenile Court representing the interests of abused and neglected children. I also make handmade pens and other products on my wood lathe. My pens can be seen on Etsy at my shop, ElfAcresPens. Military I spent 21 years in the Air Force before retiring and moving to Ohio. best part of military service. I absolutely loved being a part of the military culture. There is a comraderie among military people unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Being a police officer or firefighter probably comes close in the respect that people in those jobs know that their lives could be placed in jeopardy at any moment, yet they willingly accept that risk to protect others. I enjoyed the opportunity to travel and live in locations that I probably would not have otherwise. I spent four years of my career outside the U.S., spending one year in Greece (somebody had to go there!)and three in Germany. Most of Europe is really beautiful. There are still castles and other buildings which have been there for centuries. It's certainly an interesting continent, but I'm still glad I live in the U.S. In addition to my overseas tours, I was stationed in Ohio (twice), California, Nevada, and Texas. Of those, I liked Nevada best. The base was only a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip and we were within a few hours drive of the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, San Diego, and national parks located in southern Utah. Las Vegas was awesome!! I spent 6 years there and did not want to leave. You can still see my heel marks on Interstate 15 from where the Air Force had to drag me away. :) I don't know how I avoided it, but I was never stationed in a war zone. In some ways, that was a disappointment because I trained to do that my whole career. But overall, I guess I was lucky in that regard. The Air Force gave me the chance to meet world leaders and high-ranking military officers from all over the world. I've got an autographed picture of President Reagan on my wall and a videotape of me introducing Vice President Gore and his wife at my squadron's Christmas Party in Germany. It still amazes me that an average guy like me from Muncie, Indiana got to do those things. The military isn't for everyone, but it made a huge difference in my life. I'm really glad that I enlisted and stayed as long as I did.
