JEFFREY's Story
Life
With hard work I succeeded in earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville without a large debt. I worked a couple of summers at Marriott's Great America, but it was working at Wisconsin Electric's Pleasant Prairie Power Plant during my final summers that allowed me to pay for my college education without huge student loans.
A month after graduating I began my first industrial engineering job with Ashley Furniture Company. I supervised an engineer (Todd), a technician (Sheri) and an intern student (Mike) to staff the second shift of the department. I built a method for using standard data based upon correlating time standards to factors so that direct time studies weren't required. We also started using random observation sampling to check whether the earnings earned were fair based on these observations. Ashley was a great experience, but I wanted to live in a larger city. So two years later, I left for CUNA Mutual Group in Madison.
CUNA Mutual was a fantastic career experience. I learned many different process design (business process reengineering), process improvement (DMAIC or six sigma, total quality management, Joiner Seven Step, etc.) , and organization design methods (operating models and Downing Kates). I also learned project management, change management, and consulting methods which enabled me to make a huge impact for CUNA Mutual Group and Credit Unions. I was so successful at business process reengineering that I became method owner (meaning I documented standards for how to do the method, what tools and templates to use, and to provide best practice examples to follow on our intranet). I also acted as webmaster, overseeing the other method owners to assure they refreshed their content and acted on customer feedback. Last, my peer Walter and I were responsible for the technical interviews during the interview process for Process & Quality Consultant hiring.

t CUNA Mutual I did more than work. For example I went to Europe with one of my cousins (we started out in Paris, drove through France to see Jim Morrison's grave, then on through Switzerland & Austria & Germany to get to Octoberfest in Munich for a week). I also learned to SCUBA dive and have taken three awesome ocean diving trips (Cozemel, Hawaii & Belize). I also attended every day of the Madison Blues Fest (unfortunately after its sixth year it disbanded; but WOW, talk about discovering great musicians that played at the festivals!!!). I still love music & films.
Sadly CUNA Mutual is going through major change, and a back office downsizing initiative eliminated my department (we were among the first 450 employees eliminated so far). So I am navigating my first career transition when I didn't have a new job before leaving since graduating college. I hear this happen to nearly everyone, so I should feel blessed that I avoided it for 18 years. I am doing my best to feel this is a great opportunity to reinvent myself and move to an exciting new career...but I don't think I will be successful at this until I land on my feet.
Speaking of sad, I have lost touch with everyone I knew at Kensha Tremper. I just spent too much time focusing on my career, and not enough on things more important.
But there is good news since Tremper.
First, I have bought my first house and dabble here and there on landscaping and home improvements. It seems that there is always a list of things to do, and never enough time & money to do them all as quickly as I would like. Maybe I will get a few of these done while lookign for a new job. I really like my neighbors and the city of Madison!
Second, I have an awesome dog (Peter). A more gentile and smart German Shepherd Dog never existed. I love taking care of dogs, and miss Pete when I travel (he gets to stay at Aunt B's Pet Resort and Spa).
Life is good, and the future will be better! I hope all is well with you!
