Jeff's Story
My story? Well as I grew up our family moved 11 times in 18 years. I got used to making friends fast and saying goodbye. That's probably what led me to this site. I'd like to reconnect with some of those old friends.
After high school I went to Montana State University to play football and get a degree. Well I played some football and I got an education, just not a degree. I credit that to a great lack of maturity. After the white-water rafting, skiing, winter camping, hot-potting and a number of bar crawls, the fun ran out and so did my scholarship! I came back to Minnesota a humbled drunk. I got a job and continued my self-destructive ways. After many hours in bars and some hours behind bars, I was introduced to a woman who changed my life. We eventually got married and had three children. I had quit drinking and using - family life was my new passion. I went back to school and got a two year accounting degree and spent about five years in the field, eventually getting a four year degree. But my wife's career in computer programming took off quickly and we needed to make a huge decision. With both of us working, our preschool age children would be raised by some stranger in daycare. That was not acceptable, so I gave up my career and stayed home to be the house-husband (Mr.Mom).
This role reversal seemed to work fine for awhile. I liked to cook and shopping didn't seem like a chore, but cleaning wasn't my strong suite. She began to do more and more of my duties which led to a few arguments. Long story short - guys should not be house husbands. Well we made it 10 years into our marriage before we divorced.
Now I had to enter the workforce again. I started to realize how easy I really had things in my old life. I worked a in-house security gig at a major Twin Cities hotel for a couple years. This boring job, the new friends I had or the depression I probably was in all led to some bad decisions on my part. I started drinking and using again. Although I was trying to be a good father, getting my kids every w/e and I had joint custody, but my partying took center stage.
I eventually lost that job in hotel security and without going into details, I committed a couple major crimes downtown (property crimes). I was facing some serious time. I had been locked up before but never for more than a couple days or a long weekend, this was kinda scary now. But with a good lawyer and a merciful judge I only got 2 years of probation.
During the above situation I landed a warehouse job at a company called Target. I've been there since 1999 and I love the work. I'm not using my formal education but life has lead me here so there must be a reason unknown to me that I drive a forklift for a living. Things are going too good, something always happens when I start to enjoy my life and relax a bit.
And that something happened on May 26th in 2005. I was on the way to a dental appointment when my daughter called me crying and said I had to come over. Well a police officer eventually got on the phone and informed me that my ex-wife had died in a motorcycle accident. That was a shock, like someone just knock the wind out of you. A lot of thoughts flashed through my mind but the main one was that my our three kids are all coming home from school, our daughter was the first one home, and our two boys would be home soon, they will all need me there.
It's been over three years now since her death and the tears are still flowing as I write this. It's just so sad that she won't be around for all of our kids achievements in life and that my kids won't have their mother to turn to in times of need or share a laugh in times of joy. And I feel for her parents, what it must be like to lose a child, I can only imagine. This world lost a very good, strong, caring soul.
But we must all carry on, and we have. Now the single parent of three teenagers, with one in college at the University of Minnesota and two in high school, I am very busy and more than ever before involved in my kids lives.

rite this much, but then again I left so much out! Okay I'm going to stop now and maybe I'll add some updates later.
Update: (Summer of 2010). I have another child going off to college. She will be attending New York University this fall. My oldest is still at the University of Minnesota and my youngest is still in High School. I'm still at Target, 11 years now, driving a forklift! Not as fun as it use to be, but it's a living. My ambition for some kind of meaningful career was lost a couple decades ago. I never wanted to live for work I'd rather work to live. I've been in a solid relationship for over nine years now. We seem to be doing good. Oh, I've been screwing around with an eBay storefront for about three years now. It might be time to get serious about it! But again it's hard to find that passion for my own business. I have proven to myself I can sell online and this business will work, but it's hard to find the drive needed to take it to the next level...updates coming later.
Update: (Fall of 2012). My oldest boy was married in May he and his wife live in San Francisco. My daughter is still in school at NYU and lives in the East Village of Manhattan. My youngest is in school in state at Winona. My girlfriend of 11 years and I are now empty-nesters! Quiet house. Trying to get a shift change at Target so we are on the same schedule. Started a new business called Minnesota Diabetic Test Strips. I buy then re-sell diabetic supplies online. Still have the eBay store, Global Momentum Auctions. Starting to find the passion again for my business.
Update: (Fall of 2014). I turned 51 just the other day. My oldest boy and his wife now live in Oregon and she attends medical school there. My daughter graduated from NYU this past May and is now a registered nurse looking for work and attending graduate school at NYU. My youngest boy is a junior at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. I'm still at Target driving a forklift, 15 years now! Still with the same woman and we did get on the same shift so we have more time together. Still have the eBay store. Getting out of the test strip business. I plan on getting serious about selling on Amazon in 2015.
Update: (Fall of 2016). My Oldest boy lives in the Portland, OR area and attends school there but has recently separated from his wife. My daughter works as a nurse in Brooklyn, NY and has moved from the East Village to Brooklyn recently. She has married and also separated since my last update. My youngest boy is still in school at LaCrosse and after graduation next year he will marry in June of 2017. Cathy and I are still going strong, 16 years! I quit my warehouse job at Target after 17 years this past June. Too many injuries over the years, so I now just run my eBiz business from home. Still have the eBay store, changed the name to North Central Traders, building an Amazon store and soon my own website. I like to say I retired but Cathy quickly corrects me, "you have plenty of years to work yet, now get in your office and sell something".
Update: (Summer 2021). I went back to work at the Target warehouse in Fall of 2019. Never really got my business to the point that I could rely on a steady flow of income so to pay my bills I'm back to punching a clock. Not driving forklifts though! Got an easier job that is not so hard on my body. My oldest boy finished school on the west coast and recently moved back to the Twin Cities for a better job with a home-grown Minnesota company. My daughter just finished her Masters in Nursing and after she is board certified she will pursue a nurse practitioner career. She is still a RN in Brooklyn, NY. She has worked in an intensive care unit at her hospital through this pandemic - we are so proud of her effort. My youngest boy did get married like I mentioned in the last up date. They bought a home nearby and have a two-year old son and are expecting their second child early next year. Cathy and I celebrated 20 years together this past May. Her only child, a son, lives nearby with his 15 year old daughter.
