Jeffrey's Story

Hi Folks, Well this is a bit out of character for me, I usually keep things to myself, the quiet type. However thing changed after I has children. I went on to college after high school to Central New England College (CNEC) for one year (for a Computer Engineering degree), then the college closed (went bankrupt) the founders stole money from the college. I then transferred to Johnson&Wales University (yes the cooking school) you see many of the professor's from CNEC went to JWU to start up the JWU Curriculm in Computer Engineering. I currently work at E M C Corporation and have been there for 11 years as an engineer. I got married after college ~ 7years after high school graduation and had our daughter on Feb 2001 (8lbs 6oz 20 1/2 inches) we had our son (9lbs 1oz 21 inches) in Oct 2002 (he was our anniversary present, born on our anniversary). For the first 3 years of our son's life everything was normal, all that abruptly changed when Alex fell limp to the floor in a local shoe store, unbeknownst to us Alex was having his first seizure. We spent countless hours at the hospitals and doctor's offices. It is so frustrating when the doctors ask you what you want to do, since when you are dealing with epilepsy there is no magic cure. We found ourselves studying all about epilepsy drug treatments and associated side effects, surgery alternatives and safety equipment (gates, helmets, bath seats, night...Expand for more
monitors etc...) All this to be able to talk intelligently with the doctors. What is really frustrating is when they ask you what you want to try next, epilepsy treatment is largely trial and error. Our son's first year with epilepsy was very frightening since at any moment he could go limp and crash to the floor (ie a drop attack), so many times that he has to wear a helmet. One of his treatments was a strict diet called the ketogenic diet (which had worked on other children) which is a high fat no carb diet (no bread, cereal, or anything with sugar in it) It was a tough 5 months preparing separate meals. Needless to say the diet didn't work, he came of the diet and luckily the drop attacks became less frequent, however a new type came up night seizures. My wife had been researching epilepsy family support sites on the internet and came upon a place that will place service dogs with children with seizures. In order to be eligible to receive on of these service animals you had to raise ~$11,000, which is when our fundraising started. Too read more about our story, please visit w w w . 4 p a w s 4 a l e x . org. A great big Thank you goes out to Today's Auburn high school as they did a wonderful/overwhemling job of helping us fundraise for son's service dog. It is now all about family, keeping our children safe and dealing with son's condition. For those of you who read this, say a little prayer for Alex.
