Jenell's Story
I'm a retired college speech communication teacher (public speaking, interpersonal, group, gender and communication, business and professional communication and an honors class in culture and communication).
Currently, I'm "reinventing" a second life career in work with international refugees, ESL, and graphic design (how to combine them is the trick!). I'm also tutoring an El Salvadorean in English who was a coffee farmer who worked with UNESCO in El Salvador.
In summer '07, I visited Strasbourg, France (my grandfather Scherbel was originally from the Alsace-Lorraine region, so this was a "roots" visit!). I attended a history of rhetoric conference there with my Bulgarian friend Donka (met while teaching at Texas A&M).
Afterwards, I took a train to Venice and rode a cheap (13 Euro per day) tour boat on the canals to the Grande Canal and San Marco cathedral area(amazing!) where I found Murano glass shops, a wonderful paperworks store with wooden Pinnoccio puppets (the story originated in Venice).
Then, I rode old 1940s-looking trains through Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia to Bulgaria where I met up with Donka again and went to a charming limestone hill town, Veliko Turnovo (see this on Google Earth and check out the photo...Expand for more
s there!).
After bunion removal foot surgery March '08, I went to Sofia, Bulgaria for a more lenthy visit and lived iwth a Bulgarian family (Bulgarian-English dictionaries for breakfast daily!) from August '08 'til mid-January '09.
Since returning to Austin, I've continued working with SIETAR Austin (Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research, an intercultural educators group, currently as vice-president of the local chapter), volunteer weekly at Texas Services for Refugees, Inc. (a nonprofit resettlement agency working with State-department designated refugees), and at Austin Parks & Recreation Dept. for the It's My Park! Day annual cleanup.
This week, I rode my bicycle to a public forum with a group of about 200-250 bicyclists to meet with Austin mayoral candidates (I commute weekly by bike 'n bus on Austin buses that carry bikes on front racks and also enjoy frequent recreational biking on Lady Bird Lake hike 'n bike trails).
Last week, I biked (they had free "valet parking" for bikes and backpacks!) to several SXSW (South by Southwest) music events--saw M. Ward sing a way-slowed down tempo version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On" and heard Marcia Ball and others Sunday at a memorial ceremony for Texas musicians.
