Jennie's Story
I was Editor-In-Chief of the annual, member of several clubs, ran with a group of honors students and band members.
Shortly before gaining my BA I was re-introduced to Wayne White (he attended SDSU, I didn't) and we were married the day after I earned my Teaching Credential in 1966, based on my having a signed contract to teach in SD City Schools. When they discovered I was pregnant the contract was canceled! I was a home Mom for the next 20 years (except for 1 year so Wayne could finish his BA). I started my teaching career in 1986 at the high school where our 5 youngest were attending; much to their chagrin. A few years later I was transferred into alternative education -Chaparral High School in El Cajon-from which I retired in 2004.
We moved from San Diego to Colorado in 2009 after 38 years in the same house, trading access to the ocean (& poor air, crowded streets) for 6 acres of Ponderosa Pi...Expand for more
nes (clean air, evening commute like midnight traffic in San Diego). Our kids said we had to choose one of them to move near so when we get old caring for us would be easier!
In addition to the standard Mom things-chauffeur, chef, clean-up artist, etc-(for 5-9 kids at a time, including assorted foster kids & exchange students) I did some part time jobs: chemist (1 year); installing swimming pool equipment (3 years); belly dancing (27 years); substitute teaching (2 years). For my 1st midlife crisis (at 40) I took up the banjo; playing traditional folk style and eventually playing in the Soft String Banjo Ensemble for 12 years; For my 2nd midlife crises (at 62) I took up Taekwondo and am currently a year from my black belt.
Currently (6/2013) evacuated from forest fire which has left our house as half of the standing immediate neighborhood homes w/no trees left, kinda a moonscape. We are all well.
