Jennifer's Story

Life Since graduation I have been on a non-stop flight. In 1999, I married a great man from Canada. We took a year off from our studies to really get to know one another then we moved to Florida. Florida has been a wild ride, we have made it through trials and tribulations, and still amongst all that has gone on, we smile. We are now entering a new phase in our life, where we are ready to embark on a new adventure. It is time for us to move from our self-centered phase to one that embodies family. We now know where the path is going and that is to Maryland, where Daniel has landed an amazing job and I now have a job as a grief counselor. Life is an amazing adventure, let go, and enjoy!! School High school rocked, but then again I look back on things with rose colored glasses. I am sure there are things that I hated about it at the time, like living at home, but there were advantages that I miss now. I miss pep-rallies, football games, and most of all I miss my high school friends. Each group of friends helped develop me into the woman that I am today and to my friends, I say THANK YOU. Life teaches you lessons, it is what you choose to listen to that makes you who you are. College First and foremost college was a time to change from a girl into a woman. My beloved sorority sisters helped me every step of the way with their guiding hands and comforting words. I went to a little liberal arts university in Arkansas and there I at last found peace with myself. I recieved two B.A.'s; one in Christian Counseling and the other in Psychology. her one fit with my way of thinking. After lots of research I found systemic therapy which was taught in Marriage and Family therapy. Looking at all the various systems at play in a person's life, helps me as a therapist to individualize their sessions and help the clients find their own individual resources. My sophmore/junior year of college I met a man that would forever change my life. After about a year of seeing one another, we decided to get married in 99. We have now been happily married for over 5 years. Dan and I took a year off after college before we both started graduate school. We decided on Nova Southeastern University because it housed both optometry and a Marriage and Family Therapy department. Dan graduated this last May with his O.D. in Optometry. I completed my masters in 2002 and went on to begin my Ph.D. studies in MFT. I have now completed my course work and am going to begin my dissertation in April!! It is now time for Daniel and I to embrace what we have been taught and to apply it to the world outside of school, this is a frightening road, but one worth taking!! Workplace Every job that I have had to this point in my life has been preparing me for this moment. I have worked as a waitress, answered phones in an optometry clinic, and I was the assistant supervisor over a multi-discipline office. Now after years of preparation, I am in a job that uses not only my school knowledge, but my former working skills. I am now working as a grief counselor for Capital Hospice in Washington, DC. It is where God wills me to be.
