Jennifer's Story

Life I am still in the Air Force and am currently stationed at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas as a Military Training Leader (MTL). An MTL is like a drill sergeant but not as intense. I love my job but the 12-14 hour days will burn you out real quick! I got married a couple years ago to another Air Force guy I met while I was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He works for the Office of Special Investigations which is like the FBI within the Air Force. I bet you never thought I, of all people, would be married to an Agent, huh?!!? hehehe!! We just bought a house in San Antonio and have no plans for kids anytime soon since we both are working the 12-14 hour days. I finished my BS last year in Human Services specializing in Psychology and plan on starting my masters whenever I get a chance! My husband is working on his Masters and plans on getting out of the Air Force in a couple years and going to work for the FBI or DEA. I'm plan on doing 20 years in the service...I just hit my 7 year mark in! Who knows where we'll go next...I'm in San Antonio until 2010 so hopefully we'll go to Europe next. Life is good and has been good...hit me up if you're in Texas :) Military I entered the Air Force on 24 February 1999 because Shannon Colomey's mom, Dolly talked me into it. Let me tell you, it was the best thing I ever did and I wish I was still in touch with her to thank her for her guidance!! Anyways, my first duty station was Buckley AFB in Denver Colorado. My "job" in the AF was to prepare budgets for units that deploy to the Middle East. I left Denver in 2000 and got stationed at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX. That was one of the best assignments! I did the same job, but it wasn't too demanding since there were very little conflicts going on in the world. Then September 11th hit. I began working 14-16 hours a day, 6 days..sometimes 7 days a week. When I...Expand for more
wasn't at work, I was on base, filling sandbags or guarding entry control points. It was a nightmare. None of us knew what was going to happen to us...if we were going to deploy, if we were going to be temporarily assigned to security forces (MP) on the base...it was real chaotic since no one was prepared. Fortunately, I didn't deploy but I got an assignment out of San Antonio to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I had it rough, huh?!!? hahha!! Hawaii was great, I was there for about 2.5 years. It's definitely overrated but the weather and the beaches were nothing like I'd seen before. I began dating this guy, Jamie, who was also in the Air Force and we got married 8 months later. I began thinking about my career and where I wanted to go with it...I knew I was sick of working a desk job, pushing paper. I wanted to get out and make a difference so I applied to be a Military Training Leader. An MTL is a drill sergeant..just not as intense. When basic trainees graduate from basic training, they have to go to school to learn their job at what we call tech school. I'm in charge of them while they're at tech school, doing their open ranks, room inspections, counseling them, mentoring them and disciplining them. I love it...it's the most rewarding job in the Air Force. So, obviously, I got accepted for that. At the same time, my husband got accepted into OSI which is the equivalent of NCIS, or the FBI. We both got assignments to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and it's where we are today. We've been here for about a year now and we love it. Working with these impressionable airmen is so fulfilling. This assignment has been good to me...just found out that I made E-6 which is Tech Sergeant...made it the first time I tested which is hard to do! I've been in an AIr Force recruiting video and an MTL recruiting video and I finished my bachelors degree.
