Jerilynn's Story

What would people remember about me from High School? Probably the girl with the long blonde hair, coke bottle glasses and sweaty hands who championed endangered species like the whooping crane in Mr. Vogel¿s Social Studies class. In college, I wanted to major in education, then biology, but my parents deterred me. So eventually to satisfy my need for the sciences, I volunteered for several years as a docent at Brookfield Zoo. I educated folks who visited Predator Ecology in the Lion House, Tropic World, Aquatic Bird House, and Australia House. I also assisted teaching classes to youngsters. In the eighties, I started my own personal campaign of environmentalism. I recycled before recycling became mainstream and when they gave you money for the pounds of paper you brought in. (When I was a kid, my father would take me with him to recycle rags and newspapers for money in Chicago). I would travel once or twice a year to recycle to Naperville, Elburn, etc. I still travel once or twice a year to recycle my aluminum at Reynolds in Bolingbrook. If you would have told me I would later live in Naperville, I would have told you that you had a screw loose. When I was growing up, my parents were thrifty. No pictures on the walls, not very many knickknacks and no wall-to-wall carpeting. I lived in 5 different small apartments before purchasing a house with my husband. Then we started a family and filled the house. Then we moved to Naperville and filled this one. Now, along comes this idea of your carbon footprint. Well, my parents left behind a very small one, but I am trying to rectify what I have done. Several years ago, I discovered eBay. Then I discovered selling on eBay and found out how hard it is to make money with all the fees. Along came my...Expand for more
girlfriend who educated me about Craigslist and later my husband discovered Freecycle. I found the Naperville Yard Sales website where you can sell without having to have a yard sale. What doesn¿t sell then goes to charities. So slowing but surely, I am unlayering my house. Now I truly understand by what my father meant, when he said, ¿You don¿t need it¿ when I was growing up. My parents had a small garden plot along their garage. Tomatoes and peppers and tomato hornworms. My Dad took me with him to get manure when the circus was in town. I didn¿t participate in the growing of the vegetables, but I did grow the tallest corn plant in my elementary science class. I hung hanging baskets of flowers on my apartment back porches and used the square foot gardening principles by my parking space behind one apartment building for a couple of years. I also helped my husband-to-be clean up his mom¿s gardens. Then we bought our first house which was in Oak Park. When my youngest was in 2nd grade, I applied and was hired to work in a garden nursery where I have been seasonally for the last 7 years. Along the way, I taught myself about drip Irrigation to reduce wasteful watering. I follow one of my co-workers¿ philosophies. Grass is meant to be dormant in the summer. By fall, when there is more rain, it will green up again. So I water my containers and vegetables with drip irrigation. I use soaker hoses for my trees. I really believe there is a need for these kind of systems. I keep all my fruit and vegetable scraps out of the landfill by composting which makes the best soil amendment. I remember my Dad spreading his grass clippings under the tomatoes. Well, if you have learned something new from my diatribe, then it has served its purpose.
