Jeromye's Story
Life
Oh, the places you'll go.... If I knew then, what I know now.... I would have packed lighter.
After high school, I attended college for a few years, trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I had no idea. Plus I had no money to go to school. So.... one night I got drunk and went out to get a tattoo. I woke up the next day and I was in the Navy! Ok, that's not how I really got in, but it sounds better that way.
I enlisted for 6 years with the service in exchange for an education in nuclear engineering and a few buckets of small bills to go to college when I got out. I got my training in Orlando and Charleston and then served upon the USS Columbus for 5 years out of Pearl Harbor, HI. From there, I traveled to Japan, Singapore, Australia, Saipain, Taiwan, Thailand, and made it as far west at the Middle East (try to figure that one out).
I got married in 1999 to a lovely girl who worked at the uniform center in Pearl Harbor. No, she's not hawaiian, she's from jersey.
In 2001, I was all set to seperate from the service and do something (anything!) else. I still didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. Unfortunately, on the way home, I was involved in an auto accident and broke my neck. Fortunately, it was nothing that cou...Expand for more
ldn't be fixed with duct tape and bailing wire. (Not really, it was fixed with screws and plates). Because of the injury, I ended up serving an extra couple of years in the Navy and took an honorable discharge on Halloween in 2002.
From there, I went to college at CSU (Go Rams!) and got a Bachelor's of Science in Forestry with a concentration in fire science. That's when I found out that you can't get a forest fire job without experience. Now, I have tons of experience, just not much in fighting forest fires. The best job I could find after graduation was with the Forest Service, performing forest inventory and analysis in upstate New York. I did this for a year before my position was eliminated.
In 2007, I found myself unemployed and with the limited funding the Forest Service had (and the limited forestry experience I had), I was unable to find another forestry job.
So, I took my electrical/nuclear engineering experience and went shopping. The Michelin Company was the first to make an offer and it was more that I was making as a forester so here I am.
I'm a bit worn out from all the traveling and moving so I'm hoping to stay here for some time and settle down.
It's been a heck of a life so far, and I'd like to say I don't have any regrets.
