Jerry's Story

Life I got my BA in Art at UW in 1967. I was commissioned a 2nd Lt through the ROTC program. I was married to Sylvia Hanson(Cheyenne Central-1965) that August before I went on active duty. I served two years in Germany(we really liked that!) and a year in Vietnam(not as much fun!). I ran convoys in Vietnam and now do paintings/models of my times over there. Sylvia went back to UW while I was in Nam. She now has a commercial art degree. I returned to UW in 1970 on the GI Bill and got my Masters in Art and a teaching certificate. I taught Art in Lexington, NE for 32 years. Retiring in May of 2004. We had two sons, John is a computer programer in Chicago and Eric is a mechanical engineer. Both are married to great girls and have children, it is great to have grandkids, I now have 5 and I think that will be it(they say). Sylvia did run a sign business out of our home in the country, doing computer cut vinyl signs/graphics. She has decided to join me in retirement. We just got back from celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary. We went to Omaha to see the new zoo exhibits, the art museum and attend a GeorgeThorogood concert-he was great! Lots of shopping also, of course, our new living room furniture should be here soon. I joined the National Guard armor unit in Lexington in 1977 and completed my time to qualify for retirement, which I started getting when I turned 60(we're old!). I enjoyed being a tank commander very much. Both my sons went thru the unit also, it paid their way through college with the GI Bill and tuition. I have quite a few hobbies, jukebox restoring, collecting records, ...Expand for more
garden railroading, woodworking, making models of Vietnam gun trucks and doing art. I have a web site but it can't be posted here, turns up on a Google search though. thescrr.com I recently got a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 two door hardtop. I had a 56 Buick I had over restored, so sold that garage queen and swear not to overdo the Galaxie. He had rebuilt the engine and put on new brakes/tires and interior. I have added new shocks and power steering(getting old). I had to put a new door in the barn(had an old slider) with a remote opener. Was quite a job, had to re-wire some for the opener and lights and clean the place up, which it needed. New pad out front and a gravel drive out to the road. Really enjoy driving it. I correspond with quite a few fellow vets, help out in veterans projects, and am a member of several veterans organizations. I donated many of my paintings of Vietnam to the Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Virginia. You can see a pix of some on my profile. I went to the Vietnam Transportation reunion there in June of 06 . I had a fabulous time , found several guys from my company, some that I didn't even know about. Sylvia and I enjoyed the harbor dinner cruise and some museum and plantation tours. I am begining my 15 th year of retirement and having great fun-so busy I can't believe I ever had time to work, so if you haven't bailed out of the work market yet, do so SOON! Moved to Newton, Kansas last year to be close to our youngest son in Wichita and the grandkids. Really like being around them and like the town. Neighbors like the new train layout I made.
