Jerry's Story

After high school, I continued working at the John Jacob Astor Hotel in Astoria and then took a job in Portland with the State of Oregon, Department of Human Resources, in late summer of '61. Over the next 30 years with the Department, I held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility and challenge in Portland and then took a job with them in Salem and commuted for the final 11 years until retiring at the end of 1992 - yes, it looks like I worked for them for 32 years but at the end of year 5, I took 22 months off to go to PSC/PSU full-time. Never graduated but had a good time learning quite a lot of new things, particularly in earth sciences (especially the geology of Oregon and what all happened to make it so beautiful and scenic) and studying and exploring music (theory, composition, counterpoint, and orchestration). In '65, my companion at the time and I started renting and then bought an older 4-bedroom house together in SW Portland - Lair Hill Park area - lived there together for 13 years, got it paid off and then sold it, splitting the profits, going our own separate ways and each buying another house in very early 1978 in the inner NE area of Portland - mine's in the Sabin area (squeezed in between the Irvington and Alameda neighborhoods) after returning from an absolutely fantastic three-week trip to Egypt in November, 1977. Over the ensuing years I had the good fortune of being able to see and explore a lot of Oregon and the beautiful Pacific Northwest on the back of an assortment of "steeds," the last of which was a 1982 Honda Goldwing Aspencade (a motorcycle for those of ...Expand for more
you who don't know) - talk about riding in comfort and luxury! - which I finally put to rest in '87 having become convinced I was being called to monastic living and started divesting myself of "things." Well, apparently there was a faulty connection and the message got garbled - spent many weekends over a year's time out at the Benedictine monastery at Mt. Angel but that's as far as it ever went. Discovered I'm pretty much a loner who doesn't do particularly well in multi-person situations. I like peace, quiet, and solitude but when one is a member of a community where there is a major focus on communal living, you can't just up and take off and go be alone in the woods or wilderness whenever the mood strikes. Am now enjoying retirement, doing pretty much what I want to do and when I want to do it. Spend quite a bit of time reading, continuing with my genealogical research on the family (been at it now for over 40 years -- talk about a fun way to learn about history and also discover some surprises along the way!), puttering in the yard, and enjoying the fruits of my labours - raspberries, black caps, blue berries and triple crown blackberries, along with tomatoes, green peppers and green beans - okay, so some of them are vegetables but...whatever. Although deteriorating physical issues and some occasional health issues have caused me to slow down a bit, I've discovered that, by going slower, I get increasing opportunities to smell a whole lot more roses, which is kinda nice except for the danged hay fever! With love and good thoughts to all on this first full day of summer. 06-21-2013
