Jerry D.'s Story

Charlotte and I were married on June 26, 1971 and I joined the US Army in Sep,1971. Twenty years later in 1991 I retired as a First Sergeant. We spent eight years in Germany and had a great time there. We were able to visit London, Paris, Copenhagen, Salzburg Austria, and a hundred other places. We have been in Fort Knox since 1985. Charlotte and I recently celebrated our 37th anniversary. We have two great children. They are in their thirties now. Jerry jr is a paramedic in Bullett County KY and Carrie is works at Walmart. Granddaughter Mercedes starts Western Kentucky University in the fall. She is majoring in Accounting. Grandson Brian starts High School in the fall. Like me he will major in lunch with a minor in socializing. I am the Manager of Information Systems for the Kentucky Bluegrass Challenge Academy in Fort Knox, and I love my job. I can't believe they pay me to do this. To see what we do Google, Bluegrass Challenge Academy. I published the poems I wrote in High School. The book is KRONOS Visions of Color and Time. Look for it soon at Authorhouse dot com and Amazon.com. School Mr, Fellows inspired me the most. He was my electricity teacher. He was always telling us to make something out our lives, to be somebody. One day he said " Boys somebody has to pump the gas, are you going to spend the rest of your lives pumping gas?" It didn't hit me then but several years later it did. I was a newly promoted Buck sergeant E-5 when I realized that I wasn't going to pump gas for a living. I was going places in the army. The army was good to me. I remember with fond memories the days of high school and Mr. Fellows teaching young boys how to be men. College The big thing about this is that I am the first one in my immediate family to graduate from college. I was the first but not the last. I used the GI bill and received a BBA at the young age of 44. I wish I had gone to IU after high school and become an archaeologist. Workplace After a...Expand for more
successful military career I completed my degree and discovered I had a thing for computers. My time with the Kentucky Youth Challenge Program has been very rewarding. I am the Manager of Information Systems and I love it. If I won $100 million, I'd give 1,000,000 of it to my Church, set up a college fund for my decendents, give my children and grand children $1,000, 000 and tell them their allowance is paid in full don't ask me for money ever. Then I would spend the rest on selected charities and then travel to all the places one only reads about in National Geographic. Of course, bluejeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, cut off jeans. I don't follow fashion. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by living long enough. I always wanted to be a bank robber when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a stupid idea. As it turns out, they were right. I relax by throwing rocks at the crows. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have coffee, coffee, and more coffee to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is King Leonitis The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is John Collins, because he owes me five bucks.. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to my family and church, then spend the rest on Charlotte and me, travel and enjoy the trip.. My current age is 59. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old. I was so completely right.. Live long and prosper. My best friend would tell you I'm crazy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as crazy.. That is me bluejeans and t-shirt. I share my home with dogs, which I find unappetizing becuse I really don't like dogs or animals in the house.. In 10 years, I hope to be 68. I'm going to get there by staying alive.. My first job was at the Big Wheel restaurant, where I got paid money to clean up tables and mop floors. What I remember most about it is the free food and coffee and the cute waitresses.
