Gerald's Story
Life
Have not lived in the south burbs since graduation; have moved around a lot. Retired from State of Indiana in Jan '20. Happily married to a girl from Crete-Monee HS (!), together since 1979. I have an '05 Suzuki 800 for my mid-life crisis thing, play (very poorly) several different instruments. I would love to hear from anyone who went to South.
School
First 4-year class at Rich South! Everything was new. A lot of young teachers.
College
NIU! Cold winters, hot, humid summers. Short Greyhound trip home if desired. Too much partying, but had a good time. BA in Journalism. Then an Associates Degree from Tidewater in Environmental Science. Good school, good teachers. A Graduate Certificate in Hazardous Materials Management from IUPUI; great school and teachers. Workplace
After college, 6 years as an officer in the Navy. Then insurance for a few years. I worked at a waste-to-energy facility shortly (very interesting), then in a shipyard, refueling the USS Enterprise (CVN-65). After the move to IN, worked for IUPUI Environmental Department, then a chemical company environmental department (Reilly Industries).
I retired from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Jan '20. All the usual problems of a bureaucracy, but the work is important and meaningful.
Military
Received a commission in Pensacola, (AOCS class 17-80, Staff Sargent Robert Brown, USMC.) went through flight school. After advanced navigation school at Mather in Rancho Cordova, CA, went to SWOS Newport RI and onto USS Hermitage (LSD-34) out of Norfolk, VA. Left the Navy as a Lt. in '86.
