Jerry's Story

Joined the Navy after graduating and went to boot camp with Lee Martin, Lynn's brother. Retired from the Navy in '93. Was working for Siemens Energy and Automation since '94. During that time I acquired a B.S. degree. I also studied Business Administration for three years, with a focus on accounting. Married, 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Living in Atlanta, GA. area since '92. Have MANY great memories of growing up in Dolton. Haven't been back since '81. Update: Became unemployed on Feb. 27, 09. Aaaarrrrrrggggg!!!!!!!!!!! But at least at this date, Nov. 2012, I am in my first semester of grad school at Emory University in Atlanta, to graduate in the spring of 2014. Can you believe I waited until I was 56 to buy my first motorcycle?!! Mid-life crisis? Who cares? I love it. Went to my first Daytona Bike Week last year. Probably last, too. Just did it to be able to say I had. My inspiration has always come from my Dad; I'm a lot like him in many ways, which is strange because I'm not his natural son. Dad's always been my hero; he was John Wayne to me growing up. The only thing they had in common was at one time, they both smoked. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Nancy Hochberg. The one teacher I'd like to see again is Jerry Lambert. He expressed more confidence in me than any other teacher I had in high school. For a few years now, I've been working on part of our family geneology. My maternal Grandmother was the first of her generation born in America; her parents were from Germany, more correctly, Prussia. For reasons unknown, even to myself, I am quite proud of my German heritage. Many native Chicagoans know of the Schoenhofen Brewery buildings at 18th and Canal St. in Chicago. The brewery was founded by an uncle of my Grandmother's, Peter Schoenhofen. Peter was already in Chicago when Lincoln was nomina...Expand for more
ted, in Chicago, for President. For those who don't know of the Schoenhofen Brewery, if you remember the soft drink, "Green River," it was developed during the time of Prohibition, by the Schoenhofen Brewery. If you didn't see it in bottles, you probably saw it as a fountain drink. And, it was the inspiration for the 60's song of the same name. Peter Schoenhofen is buried on Chicago's North Side, in Graceland Cemetery. In keeping with the trend of the time of unusual burial crypts, he is buried in a pyramid. We don't really know why he chose this other than there was great interest in Egyptology at that time. So far, I have been able to trace the Schoenhofens, in Germany, back to about 1789, but I've not yet found records of their entry into the States. Music has always been a part of my life. My Dad played many different instruments, including guitar and piano. When he and my Mother met, he was playing in a country band up in Michigan. Though they did make a couple of records, they never made it big. I was exposed to many different types of music from classical, to country, to Big Band. I took up the trumpet in fifth grade and learned two other brass instruments in addition. At thirteen, I began singing in our church choir, which eventually led me to audition for the Thornridge Chorale. I was accepted, and spent my Junior and Senior years singing. Eventually I left the trumpet behind, though now I wish I hadn't. Just before meeting my wife, I bought a bass guitar at the encouragement of a friend, and played with that for a few years; 'played' being the operative word. Since then, I've been a vocalist, singing solos and baritone parts in church. My mentor even taught me how to pick hymns for church services and lead congregational singing. The only thing I play anymore is a radio. In addition to this site, you can also find me on Facebook.
