Jerry's Story

Dear former classmates, As the tech savvy one in the family, I am writing this for my father, Jerry Wolterstorff, at his request :-) Dad went to U of M for his BS and MS, then into the army. In ~1959 he was stationed at Fort Bliss, in El Paso, Texas. There he met my mother, Carolyn Bennett. They married and I (Eric) was born in 1961, followed by Sarah Lynn in early 65 (in Fort Monroe, Virginia), Susan in late 66 (in Darmstadt, Germany) and Cameron in 69 (back in El Paso). Dad spent 1962 in Korea and taught operations research. He resigned his commission after 11 years then continued teaching for the army through the civil service. Dad's father died in 66 (in St. Paul) and his mother in ~72 (in Apache Junction, Arizona). He and my mother divorced in 76. In 85 he married Trudy Hume. They had 23 wonderful years together, living in El Paso then Anniston, Alabama. Trudy died in 2008 and my father moved in with Sarah Lynn and her family in El Paso. Just before Covid they moved just up the road to Las Cru...Expand for more
ces, NM. My dad's professional specialty was as a geophysicist. He contributed to the sensory mechanism of the Patriot Missile System. In El Paso he moonlighted at the community college, teaching math and physics (this is how he met Trudy :-) After retiring from the civil service he taught in community college again, this time in Alabama. My dad loved working with his hands. He remodeled much of the home I grew up in, and collected coin, sea shells and rocks. My first memory was peering over the edge of a rowboat at a colony of queen conchs off the Florida shore..., and I grew up going on sea shell hunting then rock hunting trips. Our yard was filled with over forty different kinds of fruit trees—apple, peach, nectarine, apricot, plum, quince, fig, pomegranate, grape.... My dad fell in love with wood turning in his forties and has continued to create new designs and new pieces since then. Those are his pieces I've posted in the pictures. He'd love to connect. I hope each of you is well. Eric
