Jesse's Story
Life
I was born in Sarnia, Onterio, Canada on January 6, 1982. I lived there for around four years. After that, I moved to Chatum, N.J. I lived there for around a year and a half. In around 1986 or '87 I moved to Bedford, Nova Scotia, which is a suburb of Halifax. While in Bedford, I was in what you would call Cub-Scouts, except there it is in three levels, at least back then. First, I was in Beavers, then moved up to Cubs, then, briefly, Scouts. I say briefly because I moved to Lake Charles, LA soon after joining Scouts. While still in Bedford, I was also on the summer swim league for three years, and played baseball for three years. In the middle of November of 1992, I moved to Lake Charles, LA because my dad took a job at the Citgo refinery. I was in the fifth grade when I moved. My dad worked at Esso for many years while in Canada. While in Lake Charles, I finished my fifth grade year at Prien Lake Elementary School. A few days after moving to Lake Charles, I joined the Lake Area Pirates Swim team (LAPS) and was a member of the team from Nov. 1992 until Feb. 1999. After I finished at Prien Lake Elem., I went to S.J. Welsh Middle School for three years, and then went to St. Louis Catholic High School where I was on the swim team which my mom founded and was the head coach of for aroun five or six years before giving way to someone else. I was captain of the team my senior year. After graduation, I went to Louisiana College and majored in history. That only lasted for about two and a half years because of bad grades. I was put on acedemic suspention twice because of this reason. I then came home and went to SOWELA Technical Community College and majored in Criminal Justice. Also, after I came home from Louisiana College, I worked as an assistant coach for LAPS (Lake Area Pirates Swimming) for a while and worke...Expand for more
d at the YMCA as a lifeguard until Hurricane Rita shut it down. It is still closed and it looks like it will reopen in the Fall of 2009. I worked in Sulpher as a lifeguard at facility called Sulpher Parks and Recreation (SPAR) from October 2005 until Aug. 2008. I was at McNeese State University for 2 years from the Fall of 2005 (as a criminal justice major) until the Spring of 2007. I changed majors after my first semester there and went back to my original major, which was history. Things didn't turn out well for me after my second year at McNeese. The first year was good grades wise (I finished both semesters with a 2.8 GPA). My second year there was not so forgiving. I was placed on academic suspention for a year and continued to work at SPAR trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. At first, I wanted to be a pilot and looked seriously at Norwestern State's piolet program, but changed my mind and decided to go with my gut and major in Heritage Resources. I put in my application and I was accepted at Northwestern State Uniersity in the summer of 2008 to start in the Fall of 2008 and am currently working towards finishing my bachelr's in Heritage Resources. I am currently making the best grades that I've made since my time at Sowela. Everything is going great. I'm scheduled to be done by May 2010 (as of July 2009.) Next summer (summer of 2010) I'm planning on attending an underwater archaeology field school at the University of West Florida in Penscola. I'm also planning on taking the GRE sometime over the next several months and applying to Texas A&M in College Station - they have a really good underwater archaeology program there and plan on getting my Masters and maybe even my Ph.D if everything works out he way I plan it. Until then, I hope to see many of you next year at our 10 highschool reunion.
