Jill's Story

Life After graduation, I went to Concordia Luthern College in Austin. I was introduced to Cave exploring and spent 4 years with the Association of Mexican Cave Studies. I was a member of the US Deep Cave Exploration Team. I was an active team associate on numerous expeditions to Mexico studying the science and exploration of the caves of Sistema de Huautla, Oaxaca. Aside from my studies in Mexico, I traveled the world with other cavers in search of deep caves in Guatemala, Germany, France, Spain, Greece, Yugoslovia, Austria, Switzerland, and England. I was the second woman in the world to reach the -1000 meter depth. And for 10 years I held the women's world depth record. At the time, Huautla was the deepest cave in the Western Hemisphere. I moved to Georgia in 1977 where I lived for 4 years exploring, mapping and doing cave research in Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. I organized and lead sport caving trips in numerous caverns and pits. A partner and I discovered the connection between the upper and lower entrance of the infamous cave called McBrides Cave in Alabama. Maybe you saw the account of the caver rescue on the National Geographic Channel? I lead the first all women's through trip(from upper entrance to lower entrance) in McBrides Cave. Nothing is more exciting than the thrill of discovery and being the first person in the world to see a virgin passage. In 1982, I moved to Indiana and lived there for 11 years married to a caver and we had 2 boys. Having children pretty much ended my...Expand for more
caving career. I moved back to Texas in 1993 to live on my family's ranch and raise my sons. I work at the Chins Spring Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier following that career in my father's footsteps. In 2004, I was reaquainted with a caver friend from the mid 70's. We dated for 2 years (long distance) while he was stationed with the Navy in California. In 2006, we were married. He is, Lt. Commander Robert Hemperly, He is a Dentist, active duty, currently stationed NAS Corpus Christi. He recently got back from an 8 month tour of duty in Iraq. We are building a home on 15 acres in the Hill Country, 15 miles east of Kerrville. We enjoy traveling, scuba diving and bicycling. Our style of bicycling is different from most people. We tour, going for distance, not speed. Every year we go on a 2 to 3 week bibycle trip. Last year we cycled across Nevada on hwy. 50, called the lonelist highway in America. We covered 400 miles in 8 days. Due to mechanical failure of our friends bike we were stopped short of our goal of 600 miles. This year we road just short of 400 miles of the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. Other trips have included a tour through Big Bend National Park. That about brings me up to date. Military I am currently married to my college days sweetheart. Lt. Comander Robert Hemperly. He is an active duty Navy Dentist currently stationed in Corpus Christi. We were reunited after almost 30 yrs., in 2004. We got married in March of 2006 shortly before he left for a tour of duty in Iraq.
