Jill's Story
Life
After graduating from Syracuse I joined the Peace Corps, worked at Cornell University for a year, then went to Nigeria, where I was a Child Feeding Adviser for UNICEF during the Biafran War. In late 1969, worked at Columbia U. Business Library, then went to grad school at SUC New Paltz. Studied African history and politics. In 1973 went to nursing school at SUNY Stony Brook, graduated, got married, and lived in Ithaca, NY for 30 years. My husband, Bernie Kendler, was an acquisitions editor at Cornell University Press. He retired in 2005, and now we live in Columbia, South Carolina with our cats Maggie and Gabby. I'm in the Jubilee Choir at an African-American Baptist Church.

n, where I performed data entry and cooked meals for the other volunteers and for the staff. I also am on the enrichment committee at the Riverbanks Zoo, where we make presents for the animals. And there's still the Red Cross, where I sometimes answer phones on the national information hotline.
During the '80s, a little boy and his brother adopted me as their "American Grandma" while I was taking their mom and them to church Sundays. Their dad was studying at Cornell and finally became a botanist and returned the family to Ghana. Two little boys became five young adults scattered around Canada, the US and Africa. Soon I suppose there will be more little kids to spoil--as there have been more baby flamingos and lion cubs at the zoo!!!
