James's Story
Workplace
Immediately after graduating from Kent, I began my career in the Army. In 1987, I left active duty while in Germany, but continued to work as a civilian for the Army. Seeing an opportunity to return to the States, I left government service and began a career as a Financial Planner.
After about two years, I went to work for Advanced Systems Technology, a Defense Contractor specializing in computer simulations. From this job, working closely with US Army Special Forces (Green Berets), I returned to my career with the Army as a Government Civilian.
Spent four years as the Coordinator for Military Support to Civilian Authorities during disasters, most recently, I worked closely with North Carolina and FEMA for Hurricane Isabel Response and Recovery.

Gulf Coast, conducted a training exercise in Mississippi and Alabama about three weeks prior to Hurricane Katrina. The Army Training on Doctrine Command moved from Fort Monroe, VA when it was closed in 2010 (I have the t-shirt) and moved down the road to Fort Eustis. In addition to my Future Warfare Wargaming duties, it included a stint acting as BG H.R. McMaster's Executive Officer. In 2011 I became the Chief, Experimentation and Analysis Division at the newly formed Army Cyber Command at Fort Meade, MD.
In 2016 returned to Ft. Eustis as the Army Cyber Liaison to the Army Future's Command's Future Center. I retired from Government Service in 2021 with 40 years under my belt.
Almost immediately, I was picked up by a Defense Contractor to work in the DoD Joint Staff J-7 Joint Wargaming and Experimentation DIvision as an Analyst. As of October 2023, am still working there. Maybe some day I'll finally retire to the house we bought in St. Croix USVI.
