Jim's Story

NCHS, the 4 worst years of my life. U of WA, degree in history; I know more about 32 years of Florentine history than anyone needs to know. U of WA, Masters Degree in Librarianship. Yes, folks, back before it switched to "Library 'Science"". There's no "science" involved , it's all "humanship", just getting people together with whatever they think they need and, sometimes, what they really do need. Children's librarian in Spokane Valley and Moscow, Idaho. Taught librarianship and children's literature at the Administrative College of Papua New Guinea. Reference and Business Librarian at Bellevue WA Public Library; Travel Coordinator at US Embassy, Beijing, China; Admin/Finance Officer at United Nations Border Relief Operation, Bangkok, Thailand, in charge of closing Khmer refugee camps in Thailand; Admin/Finance officer for NGO in Dushanbe, Tajikistan; Editor-in Chief of UNDP "Human Development Report" for Tajikistan; editor of "Journal of International Investment" and :Journal of International Intellectiual Property", Geneva, Switzerland; freelance editor of books on intellectual property rights and investment treaties in China, Africa and South America; retired bum and day trader in Hudson Valley, NY. kids from West Central following his President's call to "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." And for the world. I'm proud of the number of refugees I have helped find homes in the USA and of the number of Jewish Torah, Muslim prayer rugs and other family heirlooms that I have brought into the USA on behalf of refugees who would have had these things taken from them upon departure from their home lands. And, just for the record, I am very proud of my black grandchildren, whose lives DO matter. I would like to add that 4 years at NCHS did add 2 things to my life for which I am eternally grateful: my friendship with Patricia Anderson, another troubled, but beautiful, soul, whose absence has left an irreplacable hole in my heart; and my lifelong friendship with Steve Stradley, whose unwavering friendship up until his death in 2017 meant that I always had a touchstone, a friend in need and a friend indeed, and a source of incredible artistic beauty wherever I might be. Few knew him for who he really was, but I miss him every day as I handle one or another of the kitchen tools he handcrafted for me or immerse myself in his magnificent Paris Exhibition painting that hangs on my living room wall.
