Jim's Story
I highly recommend retirement!
I spent most of my adult life working with computers in one way or another, with FADAC as a field artillery officer, as a programmer for a management consultant and later for Hughes Tool, while a psychologist for Vocational Rehabilitation, while an ombudsman for DHS and later while an abuse investigations supervisor, while a program manager at OUHSC family medicine, and retired from director of IT from family medicine. All along the way I kept plugging along to complete a PhD, first in IO psych at the University of Houston, where I completed everything but the dissertation, and finally ...Expand for more
managing a PhD in Ed Psych at OU in 1995.
My training in psychology has been valuable, and I did get to use the skills sort of as sidelines along the way, but once I retired I was able to find employment as an adjunct professor of psychology at MidAmerica Christian University. I get to teach tests and measurements, research methods, and statistics.
And healthcare management information systems. :-) If you're trying to improve your chances for gaining and keeping employment, I don't care what your main interest is - get some computer skills! Even if you don't actually work as a tech, it will make you valuable.
