Jim's Story

Life After graduation I was employed at the Journal of Commerce in Phillipsburg, NJ until Jul 66. I joined the Navy in Apr 66 and went to Great Lakes boot camp (Co. 464) in Jul 66. I spent 27 years in the Navy and retired as a Senior Chief Yeoman (E-8) Sep 93. Highlights included getting stationed in Gaeta, Italy for 4 years and visiting my relatives in northern Italy. I enjoyed visiting Israel (twice) and seeing all the religious sites I had only read about. I also enjoyed a trip through Ireland and had a chance to kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle. I now have the gift of "gab". I have been fortunate to be stationed in or visit: Cuba, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Bermuda, The Azores, Ireland, England, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, Luxenbourg, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sicily, Israel, Pakistan, Bahrain and southeastern Africa. While stationed at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Mons, Belgium as an YN1 (E-6), I met my future wife, Gloria Myers (E-5, US Army, stenographer) who worked for Gen Alexander Haig in his speech writer's office. We flew back to Easton to get married at St. Anthony's in December 78. She got out of the Army after 6 years and I transferred to USS Bowen (FF 1079) in Charleston, SC in Jun 81. We lived in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA from 1984 to 2002. I was with Attack Squadron 42 (NAS Oceana, Va Bch), USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER CVN 69 (Norfolk) and Navy Manpower Analysis Center (SDS) (Chesapeake, VA) during this time. While in the process of job hunting in Oct 99, I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and had surgery on Nov 1, 99. 28 days of radiation therapy and 15 months of chemotherapy followed! I have been cancer free since then (thank God). My wife and I separated in Dec 02 and our divorce was final in Jul 03. We sold our nice home in Norfolk and I moved back to Easton in Mar 03 to be close to my family. I would like to hear from anyone who knew me in school especially those guys from Vocational Printshop and anyone from the Navy. I was elected Class President recently and have been very involved with class events including monthly breakfasts and class picnics. I am also involved with the EAHS Vietnam War Memorial Committee which is raising money to build a memorial on high school grounds. We are looking for classmates who attended or graduated from 1959 to 1975 who were in Vietnam. Even though I have been cancer free since Nov 1, 1999, the chemo and radiation caused my body to have problems which I am still trying to take care of. Many surgeries and doctor's appointments since then. I just take each day one at a time and hope for the best. On July 27, 2018, I had surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Sacks, a plastic surgeon, took my upper left leg quad muscle and inserted it into my perineal non healing wound. Since my pelvic area had radiation therapy back in 2000, he was hoping that new skin and muscle would heal my wound. So far I am not having problems and I pray that this surgery will be my last. The surgery only lasted less than a year. The non healing wound caused by radiation therapy came back. This wound leaks in the perineal area and when my temperature goes up to 102/103, I am admitted to the hospital to have this wound area cleaned out. Then I am sent home where I have visiting nurses come 3 times a week to clean and treat the wound. Still have the leaking non healing wound but no hospital stays lately. My brother, Joe,...Expand for more
checks on this wound since it's in a place I can't see very well. He acts like my nurse and cleans and puts medication on it. Thank God for him. School I was a vocational printshop student during 10th thru 12th grades. I was quiet and concentrated on my studies most of time. I enjoyed Printshop (Mr. Adams), English and Art classes the most. I supported our wrestling, football and basketball teams. I spent quite a bit of time at these sporting events just to catch a glimse of a certain cheerleader I had a crush on. I used to live at 3143 Wm Penn Hwy back in 65 but now it's a Nissan car dealership! In fact, that whole area has changed from farm land to developed property. I went to our 30th class reunion in 1995. It was nice to see some of my classmates. I enjoyed my high school days (except for the bullies) and still strongly support all our sports teams. Go Rovers!!! I would like to hear from anyone who knew me in school especially the printshop guys. Workplace After graduation I worked at the Journal of Commerce in Phillipsburg, NJ until early Jul 66. I joined the Navy in Apr 66 and went to boot camp in Chicago, IL in July 66 until Oct 66. I retired from the Navy after 27 years in Sep 93. I was living in Norfolk, VA at the time and got hired as a credit card collector at Household Finance Corp. in Chesapeake, VA. I lasted 10 months there because it wasn't my cup of tea. I prefer helping people out, not harrassing them. Later after passing the postal exam I was hired as a carrier in Chesapeake. I quit being a carrier and later was hired as a clerk. I am fully retired now. Military Joined Navy in Apr 66 and went to Boot Camp (Co. 464) at Great Lakes, IL in Jul 66. After boot camp graduation in Oct 66 I went to Yeoman A School in Bainbridge, MD. 1st command, VC-10, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (tropical paradise behind barbed wire). YNSN; 2nd command, RCVW-4/CLAW-1 NAS Cecil Field, Jax, FL. YN2; Reenlisted for overseas duty to Naval Support Activity Naples Detachment Gaeta, Italy (70-74)(mid way between Rome and Naples); was able to visit my relatives and see a lot of Europe on vacations. YN2; Next came Patrol Squadron 23, NAS Brunswick, ME (74-77) (could it get any colder!). We deployed to Rota, Spain, Bermuda and the Azores. YN1 Back to Europe to SHAPE Headquarters in Mons, Belgium (77-81) (YN1)(met my future wife, Gloria, here). Visited Ireland, UK, Holland, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, France and Luxenbourg. Back to sea duty with USS BOWEN (FF 1079) in Charleston, SC (81-84). (YNC) Visited Palma, Sicily, France, Spain, Italy, Bahrain, and Israel. Visiting all those holy sites I had only read about in Israel was a highlight. And it was much safer then! Received Unit Citation for support of US Marines at Beirut, Lebanon. Attack Squadron 42 in Oceana (VA Bch VA) (84-88) came next, made E-8 YNCS. USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69)(88-91), Captain's Office. Med cruises and deployed to Indian Ocean during Desert Storm/Gulf War. First hand look at the Suez Canal from a aircraft carrier. 91-Sep 30 93) Navy Manpower Analysis Center, Chesapeake, VA (Source Data Systems, Fleet Support Section). The night prior to signing my retirement papers (Sep 29, 1993) I went to an Aerosmith concert at Hampton Coliseum. My ears were still ringing the next day! 27 years, 3 months, 03 days all told. Only served on two ships in 27 years which isn't that bad. I had a good time and enjoyed the people I worked with. I would like to hear from anyone who knew me at any of these duty stations.

That is Jim Smith, Sandy's husband next to her. When I try to tag his name, I get wrong names. Same with Paul Ruth. Facebook is messed up.

Geore Kocher up from Florida.
Hmm, this is what he said when running against Hillary Clinton. I guess it does not affect him now. LOL
